The heart of Madinah, is al-Masjid an-Nabawi — the mosque of the Beloved ﷺ — and to step inside it is to step into one of the most honoured places on the whole earth. He ﷺ told us that a single prayer here is worth more than a thousand prayers anywhere else, save only the Masjid al-Haram. Let that not swell your chest with pride; let it bow your head with gratitude. Enter with the right foot, with the supplication on your lips, and pray two rak’ahs if you can:

اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ

Allāhumma-ftaḥ lī abwāba raḥmatik.

“O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy.”

And then, if you can, come at the quieter hours, and simply sit. Sit with the Qur’an. Send your blessings on him, one after another. Make your du’a. And lift your eyes to the astonishing sight all around you: Muslims from every corner of the earth — every colour, every language, every history — gathered in one place, for the love of one man ﷺ. Let it soften you toward this Ummah. And carry away the deepest manner of this mosque: that he ﷺ was sent as a mercy. If your time near him leaves you harsher, prouder, quicker to argue and to judge — then you have sat near the place, but you have not yet learned its lesson. The one who truly loves him walks out softer than he walked in.
