Twenty metres from the Ka’bah, beneath the marble floor that pilgrims cross a million times a day in tawaf, a shaft of hand-cut stone drops thirty metres into the rock of a dry valley. It has no surface, no visible mouth, no shimmer of water catching the sun the way a desert oasis is supposed to look. You cannot see it. Most pilgrims who drink from its water during their Umrah or Hajj will never once look upon the place it comes from — a chilled cup, a paper cone, a plastic bottle handed across a counter, and that is the whole of the encounter. And yet this hidden shaft is arguably the most continuously used water source on earth, older than the Ka’bah’s current stones, older than Makkah as a settled city, bound up in hadith, in the rites of Hajj and Umrah themselves, and in a family story that begins with a mother and a crying infant abandoned in a valley with no water at all.
This guide sets out to do for Zamzam what a serious documentary would do: tell the story completely, cite every claim to its source, and never blur the line between what the Prophet ﷺ said and what later storytellers added to make the story more moving. That line matters enormously here, because Zamzam sits at an unusual intersection of rigorously authenticated hadith, honestly graded but genuinely disputed hadith, respected but non-Prophetic historical tradition, real and ongoing hydrogeological science, and — more than almost any other site in this series — heavily circulated pseudoscience and myth that pilgrims are told as though it were fact. Separating those categories is not pedantry. It is a service to anyone who wants to love this place for what it actually is, rather than for an invented version of it.
What follows draws on the foundational hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari, the sira literature of Ibn Ishaq as preserved by Ibn Kathir, the classical and contemporary fatwa literature on the hadith of Zamzam’s virtues, the technical publications of the Saudi Geological Survey’s Zamzam Studies and Research Centre, peer-reviewed hydrochemistry, investigative journalism on both the well’s water quality and the global trade in counterfeit “Zamzam,” and the practical, dated realities of travelling with Zamzam water in 2025 and 2026. Where sources disagree — and on more than one question here, serious scholars and serious scientists disagree sharply — this guide reports the disagreement rather than resolving it by fiat. Where a claim could not be verified despite real effort, that is stated plainly rather than smoothed over.
Historical Background: Zamzam Before and After Islam
Geography of the Valley
Makkah sits in a narrow, rocky valley in the Sarawat mountains of the western Arabian Peninsula, a landscape of bare granite and diorite hills with almost no natural surface water and almost no cultivable soil. The valley in which the Ka’bah stands is part of the drainage basin of Wadi Ibrahim, a seasonal watercourse covering a catchment of roughly sixty square kilometres that channels the region’s infrequent but sometimes violent rainfall down through the city and, historically, straight across the area of the Ka’bah itself during major floods. It is this same wadi’s alluvial fill — sand, gravel and weathered rock washed down from the surrounding mountains over millennia — that the Zamzam well shaft passes through in its upper metres before it reaches bedrock, a detail that will matter considerably when this guide turns to the well’s hydrogeology.
Before Zamzam, before the Ka’bah, before any settlement, this valley had one defining characteristic: it was dry. Classical Arabic geographers and the Islamic tradition alike describe pre-Zamzam Makkah as uninhabited and uninhabitable, a stop on trade routes rather than a home, precisely because there was no reliable water. Every account of the valley’s transformation into a city — sacred first, then commercial, then political — begins with the arrival of water where there had been none.
The Well’s Physical Position and Significance
The well of Zamzam is located approximately twenty to twenty-one metres east of the Ka’bah, within what is now the Mataf, the paved circumambulation area of the Grand Mosque (Wikipedia, “Zamzam Well”). Its proximity to the Ka’bah is not incidental in the Islamic account of its origin — Sahih al-Bukhari’s foundational narration places the spot “at the highest place in the mosque,” meaning at the site later enclosed within Masjid al-Haram, a detail that ties the well’s location directly to the sacred precinct rather than treating it as a separate, unrelated water source that merely happened to be nearby.
The importance of this cannot be overstated for how Makkah developed as a city. A permanent, reliable water source in an otherwise waterless valley made possible everything that followed: settlement by the Yemeni tribe of Jurhum, the growth of a resident population around the Ka’bah, the viability of Makkah as a caravan stop on the routes linking Yemen to the Levant, and eventually the city’s rise as the pre-Islamic Arabian Peninsula’s most important sanctuary town, home to the Ka’bah and its custodianship — the single most consequential source of prestige and income for the Quraysh in the centuries before Islam. Zamzam did not merely serve Makkah. In the most literal historical sense, Zamzam is why Makkah could exist as a settled place at all.
Pre-Islamic Importance
In the centuries before Islam, Zamzam functioned as Makkah’s principal water supply and, per the sira tradition discussed in detail below, was associated with the custodianship (siqayah) exercised first by the Jurhum and later by the Quraysh clan of Banu Hashim, the Prophet’s ﷺ own clan, through his grandfather Abd al-Muttalib and his uncle al-Abbas. The siqayah — the right and duty to provide water to pilgrims visiting the Ka’bah — was one of the most prestigious hereditary offices in pre-Islamic Makkah, ranking alongside custodianship of the Ka’bah’s keys (hijabah) and the provisioning of pilgrims with food (rifadah). That Zamzam’s custodianship remained within the Prophet’s own family line, generation after generation, down to his uncle al-Abbas at the time of the conquest of Makkah, is a detail the Islamic tradition returns to often, since it ties the well’s practical governance directly to the Prophet’s ﷺ own household long before his prophethood.
The tradition also records — through the sira material examined in the next section — that the well was lost to living memory for generations between the era of Isma’il and the era of Abd al-Muttalib, buried and its location forgotten amid the disputes and departure of the Jurhum. Whatever the precise historical mechanism, by the pre-Islamic period Makkah’s collective memory held that a sacred well once given by Allah to Hajar and Isma’il had existed, had been lost, and needed rediscovery — a rediscovery narrative treated fully in the next section, with its proper sira grading intact.
Zamzam After Islam
With the establishment of Islam, Zamzam’s status shifted from a valuable regional resource to a site with fixed ritual and textual significance. The Qur’an does not name Zamzam explicitly, but the rites of Hajj and Umrah that developed around the Ka’bah — most directly the sa’i between Safa and Marwa, explicitly linked in Sahih al-Bukhari 3364 to Hajar’s search for water — cannot be separated from the Zamzam origin story. Drinking Zamzam water became, and remains, one of the near-universal acts every pilgrim performs at the conclusion of tawaf, grounded in the hadith material examined in Sections 5 and 6 below. The well’s water was also, per multiple sahih hadiths treated later in this guide, specifically used to wash the Prophet’s ﷺ chest in the two most significant physical encounters between him and the angel Jibril recorded in the sira — the childhood “splitting of the breast” tradition and the Isra and Mi’raj.
Through fourteen centuries of Islamic rule — Rashidun, Umayyad, Abbasid, Mamluk, Ottoman and Saudi — the well has never stopped being used, and the structures built over and around it, discussed in full in the Historical Development and Architecture sections below, form one of the longest continuous building histories at any single point within Masjid al-Haram. Today the well sits enclosed in a basement chamber beneath the Mataf floor, no longer visible to the ordinary worshipper, its water reaching pilgrims instead through a filtration, sterilisation and distribution system operated by the Saudi state at an industrial scale — a transformation from hand-drawn well to modern municipal infrastructure that this guide will trace in detail, without losing sight of the fact that, hydrologically, it remains the same aquifer that is said to have first answered Hajar’s search nearly four thousand years ago.
The Office of Siqayah and Its Place in Pre-Islamic Makkan Society
To understand why Zamzam mattered so intensely to the society into which the Prophet ﷺ was born, it helps to understand the structure of pre-Islamic Makkan governance, such as it was. Makkah in the sixth century CE had no king, no formal state apparatus in the sense familiar from neighbouring Byzantine or Sasanian territory, and no standing army. What it had instead was a set of hereditary offices attached to the Ka’bah and its surrounding rites, distributed among the leading clans of Quraysh as a way of sharing prestige, responsibility, and the practical labour of running a pilgrimage centre without any single family monopolising all of it. The hijabah, custodianship of the Ka’bah’s key and door, sat with one clan. The rifadah, the provisioning of pilgrims with food, sat with another. The siqayah, the provision of water — meaning, concretely, Zamzam — sat with Banu Hashim, the clan into which the Prophet ﷺ would later be born.
This is worth dwelling on, because it means the well was never simply a natural resource sitting passively in the landscape, available to whoever happened to need a drink. It was an institution, staffed and managed by a specific family, whose reputation depended on doing it well — sweetening the water in some traditions with dates or raisins for pilgrims, in the manner some sources describe of Abd al-Muttalib’s own practice, and maintaining year-round availability for a population that swelled dramatically during the pilgrimage season. Holding the siqayah was not merely an honour; it required real, sustained administrative competence, and the Islamic tradition remembers Banu Hashim as having performed this duty capably across multiple generations, from Abd al-Muttalib through his sons to al-Abbas.
The Story Behind the Place: Hajar, Isma’il and the Water That Made a City
The Foundational Account: Sahih al-Bukhari 3364, in Full
Every serious account of Zamzam’s origin must begin from a single place: one long, continuous, authenticated hadith. It is narrated by Ibn Abbas, transmitted through Sa’id b. Jubayr, recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari 3364, with a chain running through Abdullah b. Muhammad, Abdul-Razzaq, Ma’mar, and Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani on one line and Kathir b. Kathir b. al-Muttalib on another, both converging on Sa’id b. Jubayr from Ibn Abbas (sunnah.com/bukhari:3364). Its grading requires no further comment beyond what it already is: it stands in Sahih al-Bukhari, and everything within the core text of Bukhari’s and Muslim’s collections is accepted by the consensus of hadith scholarship as authentic, the highest tier of hadith authentication available. Grade: Authentic (sahih).
This is worth pausing on before the narrative even begins, because so much of what circulates about Zamzam blurs together this one sahih hadith with centuries of embellishment added afterward. Everything in the following paragraph, unless separately flagged, is drawn directly from the wording of Bukhari 3364 itself.
Ibrahim brought Hajar and her infant son Isma’il to the valley of Makkah and left them “under a tree on the spot of Zamzam, at the highest place in the mosque.” At that time, the hadith states plainly, “there was no water” at all, and Makkah was uninhabited — no person, no shelter, no provision beyond what Ibrahim had brought with him. He placed a bag of dates and a small water-skin beside them and turned to leave. Hajar followed him, asking: “O Ibrahim! Where are you going, leaving us in this valley where there is no person whose company we may enjoy, nor is there anything to enjoy?” She repeated the question. He did not turn back and did not answer. Finally she changed the question itself: “Has Allah ordered you to do so?” He said: “Yes.” And she said the words that the hadith preserves as her own: “Then He will not neglect us.”
It is worth sitting with that exchange rather than rushing past it, because Bukhari 3364 records it as directly as it records anything in the entire narration. A woman, left with an infant in a valley with no water and no human company, does not receive an explanation. She receives a single word — “Yes” — confirming that this abandonment is a matter of divine command rather than human negligence, and on the strength of that one word alone she stops asking why and simply concludes that she has not, in fact, been abandoned. The hadith gives no embellishment here, no extended dialogue, no description of her expression or her tears. It is spare, and the starkness is part of what makes it work as testimony rather than as literature.
Ibrahim walked on, and when he was out of their sight, the hadith records that he turned toward the direction of the Ka’bah-to-be and prayed — and at this point Bukhari 3364 quotes, as part of the hadith text itself, words that also appear in the Qur’an:
﴿رَّبَّنَا إِنِّي أَسْكَنتُ مِن ذُرِّيَّتِي بِوَادٍ غَيْرِ ذِي زَرْعٍ عِندَ بَيْتِكَ الْمُحَرَّمِ رَبَّنَا لِيُقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ فَاجْعَلْ أَفْئِدَةً مِّنَ النَّاسِ تَهْوِي إِلَيْهِمْ وَارْزُقْهُم مِّنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَشْكُرُونَ﴾
“Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in a valley without cultivation near Your sacred House, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make hearts among the people incline toward them and provide for them from the fruits that they might be grateful.”

Ibrahim then departed for the land of Syria. The provisions ran out, as provisions for two people with one water-skin in a hot valley inevitably do, and Hajar’s milk failed with them; Isma’il, an infant, began to suffer visibly from thirst, twisting and, in some versions of the wider narration, kicking at the ground. Unable to bear watching him and unable to do nothing, Hajar left him and went to the nearest high ground, a hillock the hadith names as al-Safa, and stood searching the horizon for any sign of a person or a caravan. Seeing nothing, she went down into the valley, crossed it — the hadith notes she ran across the valley floor specifically because she could not see her son from within it — and climbed the second hillock, al-Marwa. She repeated this back-and-forth seven times, and the hadith is explicit and unambiguous about why this detail is preserved: “That is why the people go around them (i.e. Safa and Marwa).” The sa’i performed by every pilgrim during Hajj and Umrah is, according to this sahih hadith, a direct ritual re-enactment of a mother’s search for water and rescue for her dying child.
On her final approach — the hadith’s phrasing suggests it was on the seventh circuit, at or near Marwa — she heard a voice. She said, in words the hadith records directly, “Hush!” — trying to quiet herself in order to listen — and then addressed the voice: “You have made me hear your voice; do you have something to help me?” And there was the angel, at the place where Zamzam now stands, striking the ground until water flowed out. Hajar began to dam and scoop the water with her hands into her water-skin, and as she worked to contain it she said, “Zam! Zam!” — an exclamation the tradition preserves as meaning something like “stop, stop” or “collect, collect,” and which is offered, within the same sahih hadith, as the origin of the well’s name.
The hadith then records something remarkable: a direct comment from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself, centuries later, on his own ancestor’s action at that moment. He said: “May Allah bestow mercy on Isma’il’s mother! Had she let the Zamzam spring flow without trying to control it — or had she not scooped from its water — Zamzam would have been a stream flowing on the surface of the earth.” This is not later commentary layered onto the story by someone else. It is part of the same continuous, sahih hadith — the Prophet ﷺ narrating his own family’s history and offering, in the same breath, a wry, almost tender observation about how a mother’s instinct to conserve water for her child shaped the physical form the miracle took.
The hadith continues, still within the same narration, to describe what followed. Birds began circling the water — a sign, in a waterless desert, that is unmistakable to anyone who knows how to read it — and this drew the attention of a group from the Yemeni tribe of Jurhum, who were passing along the route from Kada. Seeing the birds circling, they sent scouts, found Hajar and the spring, and asked her permission to settle nearby. She agreed, on the explicit condition, preserved in the hadith, that they would have no right of ownership over the water itself. Isma’il grew up among the Jurhum, learned Arabic from them, and eventually married a woman from among them. Ibrahim returned to visit his son more than once during this period — the hadith recounts at least two such visits in some detail, including an episode in which Ibrahim, arriving while Isma’il was away, spoke first with Isma’il’s wife and left a coded message about whether Isma’il should keep or divorce her, based entirely on how she responded to a stranger’s simple request for food and water, a message Isma’il correctly interpreted on his return. The narration concludes with Ibrahim and Isma’il together raising the foundations of the Ka’bah, all within this same continuous account (sunnah.com/bukhari:3364).
A note on authenticity: everything recounted in this section down to this point is drawn from the single continuous, sahih narration of Sahih al-Bukhari 3364. It should be treated as authentic hadith in its entirety. However, readers should be aware that many popular retellings of this story add details this hadith does not contain — for instance, naming the angel as Jibril specifically (Bukhari’s text says only “an angel”), specifying an exact number of days for Hajar’s search beyond the seven circuits, or supplying invented dialogue and emotional description beyond what the hadith records. Such additions typically originate in later sira (biographical) literature, especially the tradition associated with Ibn Ishaq as preserved by Ibn Hisham and Ibn Kathir, and should be understood as historical narrative colour layered onto the hadith rather than as part of the graded hadith text itself. This guide follows the discipline of quoting Bukhari 3364 directly for anything presented as authentic hadith, and labelling separately anything drawn only from sira tradition.
Abd al-Muttalib and the Rediscovery of the Well: Sira, Not Hadith
The story of how Zamzam came to be rediscovered after it disappeared from Makkah’s collective memory is one of the most beloved episodes associated with the Prophet’s ﷺ own family — and it is essential to state clearly, at the outset, exactly what kind of source it rests on. This narrative is not a hadith. It is a report from the sira, the tradition of prophetic biography, transmitted through Ibn Ishaq and preserved in Ibn Kathir’s al-Sira al-Nabawiyya (Al-Sira al-Nabawiyya, Vol. 1). Grade: Historical report (sira/akhbar). Its chain of transmission does not meet the standards hadith scholarship applies to a Prophetic hadith, and it should never be presented to readers as something “the Prophet ﷺ said” or as an event established with hadith-level certainty.
According to this sira tradition, Abd al-Muttalib ibn Hashim, grandfather of the Prophet ﷺ and at that time custodian of the Ka’bah, received a sequence of dream-visions over four successive nights. Each night he was commanded to dig for something whose name changed as the visions progressed: first “Barra,” then “al-Madnuna” — the treasured or hidden one — and finally, on the fourth night, he was given the name “Zamzam” directly, along with a description of it as inexhaustible, sufficient to satisfy the great pilgrimage, and located at a specific spot: between the dung of a red cow and an anthill, near a place where the Quraysh at that time were in the habit of throwing their rubbish.
Abd al-Muttalib had, at that point, only one living son, al-Harith, and he took the boy with him to dig at the indicated spot. Digging down, the tradition reports, he uncovered not only the buried well itself but also treasure said to have been hidden by the departing Jurhum generations earlier — gold gazelle statues, swords and armour. When word of the discovery spread, the Quraysh disputed Abd al-Muttalib’s claim to exclusive ownership of the well, arguing that as their common ancestor Isma’il’s legacy, it belonged to all of Quraysh jointly, not to Banu Hashim alone. Abd al-Muttalib proposed resolving the dispute by consulting a female diviner known to settle such matters, located in Syria. According to the tradition, the journey never needed to reach her: partway there, in the desert, water miraculously appeared beneath the hoof of Abd al-Muttalib’s camel, a sign the Quraysh accepted as divine vindication of his sole claim to Zamzam, and the party turned back without ever completing the journey.
A separate tradition, recorded in the same sira sources, describes Abd al-Muttalib’s vow that if Allah granted him ten sons who lived to protect him in his old age, he would sacrifice one of them at the Ka’bah. When he did have ten surviving sons and cast lots to fulfil the vow, the lot fell on Abdullah — the very son who would become the father of the Prophet ﷺ. The Quraysh intervened to prevent the sacrifice, and the matter was resolved instead by repeatedly casting lots between Abdullah and camels, raising the number of camels by ten each time the lot still fell against the camels, until it finally settled at one hundred camels, which were then slaughtered in Abdullah’s place. It is worth noting that Ibn Ishaq’s own version of this vow story is introduced with explicit hedging — “it is claimed that…” — signalling that even the sira compiler himself regarded the story’s certainty as open to question (Al-Sira al-Nabawiyya, Vol. 1).
A note on authenticity: the rediscovery narrative is traced by Ibn Ishaq through a chain that includes Yazid b. Abi Habib al-Misri, Marthad b. Abdullah al-Yazani and Abdullah b. Dhurayr al-Ghafiqi, attributed ultimately to a report from Ali b. Abi Talib — a chain of historical transmission rather than a hadith isnad meeting the criteria of continuous, verified, trustworthy narrators. Tellingly, Ibn Ishaq and Ibn Kathir themselves insert reliability caveats throughout their own text: phrases such as “but God knows whether that was so,” a note that one narrator in a related chain, Suwayd b. Sa’id, is a weak link, and “this is questionable, but God knows best,” appear repeatedly in the primary source itself (Al-Sira al-Nabawiyya, Vol. 1). This is a case where the classical compilers of the sira were themselves openly cautious about the material’s certainty, and a modern retelling should carry the same caution. It is entirely appropriate to narrate this as the standard traditional account of the well’s rediscovery — it is not a fabrication, and no responsible source dismisses it outright — but it belongs to the category of respected historical tradition, not the category of authenticated Prophetic hadith, and the two should never be presented to a reader as equivalent in certainty.
Why the Story Matters: Reading Hajar’s Search as the Origin of a Rite
What makes the Bukhari 3364 narrative unusual among origin stories connected to Islamic sacred sites is how directly and explicitly it is tied to a ritual practice still performed today, in the hadith’s own words, without any need for later interpretation to make the connection. The hadith does not merely describe a woman searching for water near two hills that later pilgrims happen to walk between. It states outright: “That is why the people go around them.” The sa’i is not a symbolic echo of Hajar’s search, added by later generations to commemorate her; according to this sahih hadith, it is a direct continuation of the search itself, ritualised and repeated by every pilgrim who has performed Hajj or Umrah since.
This matters for how a visitor should understand the physical act of walking, or now more often power-walking on a covered, air-conditioned, marble-floored corridor, between Safa and Marwa. It is easy, especially for pilgrims arriving from climates where thirst is rarely a matter of life and death, to experience the sa’i as a devotional formality — seven lengths, a set of du’as, a box to check. The hadith’s own account resists that flattening. Hajar was not performing a rite. She was a mother, alone, watching her infant son die of thirst in a valley with no help in sight, doing the only physically possible thing left to her: climbing, looking, running, climbing again. The rite that a pilgrim performs today asks the body to remember what the mind might otherwise forget — that faith in this tradition is not first expressed as a feeling, but as movement undertaken without certainty of outcome, on the strength of nothing more than trust that “He will not neglect us.”
There is also a structural detail in the hadith worth drawing out for its own sake: help did not arrive at al-Safa, on the first outward search, when hope was freshest. It arrived on the return, near the completion of the seventh circuit, at the point of exhaustion, after the search had already been repeated to what must have felt like its useful limit. The Islamic tradition draws from this a lesson about the timing of relief that recurs throughout the seerah in other contexts — that decisive help is not withheld out of neglect, but often arrives at the point furthest from where the one searching expected it, and only after the searching itself has been sustained to its end.
The Prophet ﷺ and This Place
The Chest-Washing Narrations: Childhood and the Night Journey
Among the most striking recurring details in the sira and hadith literature concerning the Prophet ﷺ is that Zamzam water was used, on at least two separate and momentous occasions in his life, to physically wash his heart during the opening of his chest by the angel Jibril. This is not a single hadith but a cluster of narrations across both Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, and it is safe to present to readers as authentic, well-established hadith content.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1636 (sunnah.com/bukhari:1636), located in the Book of Hajj under the chapter “What is said about Zamzam,” is narrated by Anas b. Malik reporting from Malik b. Sa’sa’a. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The roof of my house was opened while I was at Makkah, and Jibril descended, opened my chest, and washed it with Zamzam water. Then he brought a golden tray full of wisdom and belief, poured it into my chest, and then closed it.” Grade: Authentic (sahih) — Sahih al-Bukhari.
Sahih al-Bukhari 7517 (sunnah.com/bukhari:7517), in the Book of Tawhid, again narrated by Anas b. Malik, recounts that angels carried the Prophet ﷺ and placed him beside the well of Zamzam, where Jibril cut open his chest and “washed it with Zamzam water with his own hands.” Grade: Authentic (sahih) — Sahih al-Bukhari.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3887, Malik b. Sa’sa’a’s long narration of the Isra and Mi’raj in the Book on the Merits of the Ansar, recounts the same event with its wording centred on “a gold tray filled with wisdom and belief”; not every printed recension of this specific hadith repeats the word “Zamzam” explicitly, though it plainly recounts the same episode as 1636 and 7517. Grade: Authentic (sahih) — Sahih al-Bukhari.
Sahih Muslim 164a and 164b (sunnah.com/muslim:164a, sunnah.com/muslim:164b), in the Book of Faith, are the most explicit of all the versions: “A golden basin containing the water of Zamzam was brought to me and my heart was opened up to such and such extent… My heart was extracted and it was washed with the water of Zamzam and then it was restored to its original position, after which it was filled with faith and wisdom.” Grade: Authentic (sahih) — Sahih Muslim.
Taken together, these four narrations across Islam’s two most rigorously authenticated hadith collections establish, at the highest available level of hadith certainty, that Zamzam water was specifically used — not water in general, but this water, by name — to wash the Prophet’s ﷺ heart at the two most significant moments of angelic encounter recorded in his biography: the childhood account of the “splitting of the breast,” and the night of the Isra and Mi’raj, when he was taken from Masjid al-Haram to Jerusalem and then, in the same night, through the heavens. There is no serious scholarly dispute about the authenticity of this detail; the only nuance worth preserving is that some individual Bukhari wordings of the same underlying event do not repeat “Zamzam” verbatim in every recension, while the Muslim wordings state it with complete explicitness.
The Prophet’s ﷺ Own Practice of Drinking Zamzam
Beyond its use in the chest-washing narrations, the Prophet’s ﷺ personal habit of drinking Zamzam water is well attested across the hadith literature, cited among other places in Bukhari, and this general practice underlies the widely held scholarly position that drinking Zamzam is mustahabb — recommended — for every pilgrim (IslamQA, answer 1698).
One specific narration deserves careful handling because of how it is sometimes over-interpreted. Ibn Abbas reported: “I gave Zamzam water to Allah’s Messenger ﷺ and he drank it while standing” — a report commonly cited in modern print and online numbering as Bukhari 1637, though this exact numbering should be re-verified directly against sunnah.com at the time of any future republication, since this dossier could not independently confirm it against a primary check. A sub-narrator, Ikrima, added a specific qualification: he stated, with an oath, that the Prophet ﷺ was mounted on his camel at the time, not standing on the ground on his own two feet. This qualification matters. Commentary attributed to the hadith scholar al-Albani — cited here from circulated lecture transcripts rather than a directly verified primary published source, and flagged accordingly — explains that this instance of “standing” is best understood as incidental to crowded circumstances at the time, a practical matter of not dismounting or not having room to sit, rather than an act meant to establish “standing while drinking Zamzam” as a distinct sunnah to be deliberately replicated. This is a genuinely useful corrective, because a popular but questionable practice among some pilgrims involves making a point of standing specifically because of this hadith, treating incidental circumstance as a deliberate ritual instruction. The broader fiqh question of drinking while standing is itself a matter of separate scholarly discussion — other hadiths generally discourage casual standing while drinking, reconciled by scholars as permissible but not preferred, with the Zamzam case commonly cited as one recognised exception grounded in the Prophet’s ﷺ own recorded action.
A note on authenticity: the precise sunnah.com reference number for the “drinking while standing” narration, and the exact published source for the al-Albani commentary explaining it as incidental rather than prescriptive, could not be independently verified to primary-source standard in the course of this research and should be checked directly before being repeated as a fixed citation.
The Well During the Prophet’s ﷺ Own Lifetime
By the time of the Prophet’s ﷺ birth, custodianship of Zamzam — the siqayah, the office of providing water to pilgrims — had long been held within his own clan, Banu Hashim, beginning with his grandfather Abd al-Muttalib. This custodianship passed, by the time of the Prophet’s ﷺ mission and the conquest of Makkah, to his uncle al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib. When the Prophet ﷺ entered Makkah in triumph in 8 AH and reorganised the offices connected to the Ka’bah, he confirmed al-Abbas in the siqayah of Zamzam, allowing this particular office — unlike some others reassigned at the conquest — to remain within the family line that had held it for generations. This continuity is one of the clearest threads connecting the pre-Islamic history of the well to its status under Islam: the same family that is remembered, in sira tradition, as having rediscovered the well under Abd al-Muttalith, continued to be responsible for it under the Prophet ﷺ himself and into the earliest years of the Rashidun caliphate.

Surah Ibrahim 14:37 — Ibrahim’s Prayer in the Valley

Asbab al-nuzul and context: as discussed above, this verse is quoted within the body of Sahih al-Bukhari 3364 itself as the prayer Ibrahim offered after leaving Hajar and Isma’il in the valley, out of their sight, before departing for Syria. Classical tafsir treats this verse as part of a longer supplication of Ibrahim recorded across several ayahs of Surah Ibrahim (14:35–41), addressing the safety of Makkah, the abandonment of idolatry by his descendants, and provision for his family. The phrase “a valley without cultivation” (wadin ghayri dhi zar’in) is read by commentators as an honest acknowledgment of the harshness of the site Ibrahim was leaving his family in — this is not a prayer offered from a place of comfortable certainty about outcomes, but one that names the deprivation directly and asks Allah to supply what the land itself could not.
Classical tafsir: commentators including al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir in their respective tafsir works read the phrase “make hearts among the people incline toward them” as the prayer that Makkah would become a destination people are drawn to despite its physical inhospitality — a request answered, in the traditional reading, both by the establishment of the Ka’bah as a pilgrimage site and, at the more immediate physical level, by the appearance of Zamzam itself, which is what made continued habitation and hospitality toward visitors possible in the first place. “Provide for them from the fruits” is read as anticipating the later reality that Makkah, despite having no local agriculture, became provisioned through trade and through gifts brought by pilgrims and travellers — a fulfilment commentators see as directly connected to the request, since a waterless valley could support neither residents nor commerce without it.
Modern lesson: the verse is frequently cited in contemporary reflection as a model of a prayer offered in the middle of an action whose wisdom is not yet visible — Ibrahim does not pray this after Hajar and Isma’il are already provided for; he prays it at the moment of leaving them with nothing but dates and a water-skin, trusting the outcome to Allah rather than waiting to see the outcome before expressing that trust. Contemporary preachers commonly draw the lesson that provision often follows an act of trust rather than preceding it — Zamzam appeared only after Hajar had exhausted her own search, not before it.
Surah al-Baqarah 2:158 — Safa and Marwa as Rites of Allah

Asbab al-nuzul: classical exegesis, including material preserved in the hadith collections themselves, explains that some early Muslims hesitated over walking between Safa and Marwa because, in the pre-Islamic period, idols named Isaf and Na’ila had stood on the two hills, and pilgrims of the jahiliyyah had touched them as part of pagan ritual. When Islam arrived, some Muslims worried that continuing to walk between the two hills might be seen as a continuation of that idolatrous practice, and this verse was revealed to clarify that Safa and Marwa are, in fact, legitimate symbols of Allah in their own right — connected to Hajar’s search rather than to the pagan idols later placed upon them — and that walking between them carries no blame.
Classical tafsir: commentators connect this verse directly to the Bukhari 3364 narrative discussed above, reading the sa’i as memorialising Hajar’s search for water and Allah’s response to it, rather than as any continuation of pre-Islamic idol veneration. Ibn Kathir’s tafsir on this verse explicitly narrates the Zamzam origin story as the explanatory background for why these two hills carry ritual significance at all.
Modern lesson: the verse is often read today as an example of Islam’s practice of retaining and re-purifying a physically meaningful location rather than discarding it merely because it had been misused in a previous era — the geography of Hajar’s search was not abandoned because idols had later been placed upon it; instead, the true origin and meaning of the site were restored and clarified by revelation.

The Virtues of Zamzam Water
This is the area of Zamzam hadith literature that most requires honest, undistorted handling of scholarly disagreement, and it is presented here in full rather than flattened toward a single conclusion.
Ibn Majah 3062 (sunnah.com/ibnmajah:3062), narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah with the chain Hisham b. Ammar, al-Walid b. Muslim, Abdullah b. al-Mu’ammal, Abu al-Zubayr, Jabir: “Ma’u Zamzama lima shuriba lah” — “The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for.” Grade: Disputed — this must be reported as a live scholarly disagreement, not resolved in one direction.

The Dar al-Ifta’s own summary offers the fairest single characterisation available: scholarly views range across authenticated (sahih), good (hasan) and weakened (da’if), and the relied-upon position among many later scholars is that any single chain of this hadith is weak on its own, but the hadith is elevated to hasan, or even sahih, by the accumulation of multiple corroborating chains, or shawahid (Dar al-Ifta). The most honest way to present this hadith to a reader is as follows: a hadith whose wording is widely cited by scholars as hasan on the strength of multiple corroborating narrations, though individual scholars — most notably al-Nawawi — have criticised its primary chain as weak. Neither position should be presented as having simply won the argument.
A related historical report illustrates how seriously early scholars took this hadith regardless of the later dispute over its precise grade: Ibn al-Mubarak, a well-known early scholar and ascetic, is reported to have entered the Zamzam enclosure, cited this very hadith by its chain — naming Ibn al-Mu’ammal, Abu al-Zubayr and Jabir explicitly — and then prayed: “O Allah, I am drinking it to quench my thirst on the Day of Resurrection” (Islam Stack Exchange, citing classical sources).
Sahih Muslim 2473 (sunnah.com/muslim:2473), with the chain Haddab b. Khalid al-Azdi, Sulayman b. al-Mughira, Humayd b. Hilal, Abdullah b. al-Samit, Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, found in Sahih Muslim’s Book of the Merits of the Companions, chapter on the virtues of Abu Dharr. Grade: Authentic (sahih) — Sahih Muslim.
This is a long narration recounting Abu Dharr al-Ghifari’s conversion story: his pre-Islamic monotheistic leanings, his brother Unays’s report of a man in Makkah claiming prophethood, and Abu Dharr’s own dangerous solo visit to Makkah, where he openly declared his faith near the Ka’bah and was beaten for it. The hadith records, in Abu Dharr’s own words: “I came to Zamzam and washed the blood from me and drank water from it… I stayed there for thirty nights or days and there was no food for me but the water of Zamzam. And I became so bulky that there appeared wrinkles upon my stomach, and I did not feel any hunger.” When the Prophet ﷺ later asked what had sustained him through that month, and Abu Dharr explained it had been nothing but Zamzam water, the Prophet ﷺ replied: “It is blessed, and it also serves as food.”
A well-known additional clause — “and a cure for the sick” (wa shifa’un suqm) — is not part of the Sahih Muslim wording and should not be presented as such. It is an addition narrated separately by Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi in his Musnad (hadith no. 61), cited as a supplementary, non-Sahihayn narration by IslamQA, answer 1698. The core, verified Sahih Muslim wording is “blessed… food that satisfies”; the “cure for the sick” clause belongs to a separate chain and should always be introduced with “in one narration” rather than folded silently into the Muslim hadith.
Drinking Zamzam: Sunnah Practice and a Companion’s Du’a
Ibn Majah 1017, cited via Fiqh-us-Sunnah, states that the distinguishing sign between believers and hypocrites is that the hypocrites do not drink their fill of Zamzam. Grade: Sahih isnad, per al-Busiri.
Sunan al-Daraqutni 2739, cited via secondary fiqh literature, enumerates specific intentions a person may hold while drinking Zamzam — seeking healing, satiety, quenching of thirst, or seeking refuge. Grade: Sahih, per al-Albani in Sahih al-Targhib wa’l-Tarhib, hadith 1164.
Together with Sahih Muslim 2473 above, these establish the general sunnah of drinking Zamzam to one’s fill, with sincere intention, as recommended practice.
A widely circulated supplication attributed to Ibn Abbas, recited by many pilgrims while drinking Zamzam, reads: “Allahumma inni as’aluka ‘ilman nafi’an, wa rizqan wasi’an, wa shifa’an min kulli da'” — “O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, abundant provision, and healing from every disease.” This is reported in fatwa literature, including IslamQA answer 150368 and material summarised by the Dar al-Ifta, as a report of Ibn Abbas’s own personal practice. Grade: Athar (a report of a Companion’s action or statement) — not a Prophetic hadith, and it carries no independent hadith number on sunnah.com. It is a beautiful and legitimate traditional supplication with a genuine basis in early practice, and pilgrims may certainly use it. What must not happen is presenting it to readers as words the Prophet ﷺ himself said or commanded — it is Ibn Abbas’s own du’a, not his grandfather’s grandson’s.
IslamQA’s general treatment of this question (answer 150368) confirms the broader principle: simply holding the intention while drinking Zamzam is sufficient in itself. There is no single specific du’a that is obligatory or uniquely required by any authenticated hadith. Reciting a supplication is permissible, was practised by many of the salaf, and is good general etiquette — but it is a matter of established good practice, not a fixed Prophetic wording that must be recited.
Similarly, facing the qibla while drinking Zamzam is commonly recommended by scholars as good general etiquette, consistent with facing the qibla during various acts of worship and remembrance — but no specific, named, numbered hadith establishing “face the qibla when drinking Zamzam” as a distinct textual instruction could be located in this research. This should be presented as a matter of general recommended etiquette (mustahabb), not as an explicit Prophetic command tied uniquely to Zamzam — flagged here as unverified in the specific-hadith sense.
A separate, genuinely Prophetic-chain report is worth distinguishing carefully from the du’a question above. A narration commonly cited as Sahih al-Bukhari 4.483 in older Khan numbering, narrated by Abu Jamra al-Dabi’i, records Ibn Abbas advising that Zamzam water be sprinkled on a feverish companion. As analysed by Islamhelpline, this sits alongside other authentic hadiths, cited there as Bukhari 7.619 and 7.620 in the same older numbering, in which the Prophet ﷺ recommended cooling a fever with ordinary water generally, not Zamzam specifically. The honest reading is that Ibn Abbas’s application of Zamzam to this particular case was his own reasoned personal practice, not a demonstration that only Zamzam carries this fever-cooling property.
A Note on the Search for a Fabricated Zamzam Hadith
This dossier’s research deliberately searched for a uniquely fabricated (mawdu’) hadith specifically and solely about Zamzam, with a distinct, commonly cited wording — the kind of thing many popular articles claim to “debunk.” None was found. No uniquely fabricated hadith about Zamzam, with a specific wording and a named scholarly refutation, could be identified in classical or contemporary critical hadith literature, including a direct review of compilations of inauthentic seerah narrations (Luton Islamic Centre, “Inauthentic narrations in the seerah”), which documents other, unrelated fabricated seerah stories but nothing specific to Zamzam. This absence is itself a meaningful finding, reported here honestly as a negative result rather than replaced with an invented example: the core Zamzam hadith corpus — Bukhari 3364, Ibn Majah 3062, Muslim 2473, and the chest-washing hadiths — is comparatively well-attested rather than infested with clear fabrications, and this guide will not manufacture a “fabricated hadith” to debunk simply because readers might expect one.
Two related caution points remain worth flagging. First, the wider weak-and-fabricated hadith literature does contain generic “miracle water” fabrications unrelated to Zamzam specifically — for example, a widely circulated fabricated hadith claiming that rainwater treated with recited Qur’anic verses “obviates the need for any other medicine” and even guarantees conception is explicitly ruled fabricated (mawdu’) by hadith critics, per detailed classical citation (IslamQA/Hanafi, citing Ibn Abd al-Hadi’s identification of the fabrication). Readers should apply the same scepticism to any “magic formula” health claim attached to Zamzam that cannot be traced to a real, gradable chain of the kind set out above. Second, as already noted, the Ibn Abbas du’a and any claim that a specific spoken formula is religiously required when drinking Zamzam should be corrected on sight: no single Prophetic wording is obligatory, and the popular Ibn Abbas wording is a Companion’s personal athar, not a binding Prophetic instruction.
Historical Development: From Rashidun Simplicity to Saudi-Era Infrastructure
The Earliest Period and the Rashidun Caliphate
In the earliest period for which reports survive, and continuing into the time of the Rashidun caliphs, Zamzam was a simple well surrounded by a stone fence or enclosure, with two adjoining cisterns — one reserved for drinking water and a separate one for ablution — according to reports traced back to Ibn Juraij and ‘Ata (Saudipedia, “Zamzam Well”). There is no record in this period of elaborate architecture over the well; its status was functional, tied to its role in the siqayah office held by the Prophet’s ﷺ family, first through al-Abbas and then through his descendants. Pilgrims during the caliphates of Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali drew water much as earlier generations had, by rope and bucket, from an open well within a modest enclosure inside the sacred precinct.
Umayyad Era
Surviving sources record comparatively little in the way of major new construction specifically over Zamzam during the Umayyad period (41–132 AH / 661–750 CE), a period in which the larger project of expanding and rebuilding Masjid al-Haram itself — notably under the caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan’s governor al-Hajjaj, and subsequently under other Umayyad-era expansions — took precedence. The well continued in use as the mosque’s boundaries and colonnades were extended around it.
Abbasid Era: The First Monumental Structures
It is under the Abbasids that Zamzam first received a monumental architectural treatment recognisable as a standalone structure rather than a simple enclosure. Under Abu Ja’far al-Mansur, around 145 AH (762 CE), the well received its first known marble construction, capped with a dome (Saudipedia). Under al-Mahdi, roughly 153–160 AH (775 CE), this structure was rebuilt with a teak dome covered in mosaic decoration, reflecting the broader Abbasid programme of lavish expansion and embellishment of Masjid al-Haram during this period. Later in the Abbasid era, under al-Mu’tasim, around 220 AH (835 CE), the provincial governor Omar Ibn Faraj al-Rukhji oversaw a further rebuilding: a gilded teak cover, additional mosaic decoration, and a small annex, replacing an earlier shaded structure known as a “kanisah” located near the Safa corner where Ibn Abbas himself was reported to have sat.
This roughly three-century Abbasid sequence — al-Mansur, al-Mahdi, and the al-Mu’tasim-era rebuilding — establishes a clear pattern that recurs throughout the well’s later history: each major dynasty to hold custodianship of the Two Holy Mosques treated the physical structure over Zamzam as a natural site for architectural investment and religious patronage, alongside their broader expansions of the mosque itself.
Mamluk Era: Fire and Restoration
The Mamluk period brought both destruction and repair. A fire in 795 AH (1417 CE) damaged the structure over the well, and restorations followed in 808 AH (1430 CE) and again in 877 AH (1499 CE) under Sultan Qaitbai, with marble replacement work forming part of the latter restoration. The Mamluks, who held custodianship of the Haramayn for over two and a half centuries, treated the maintenance of the Zamzam structure as one of many ongoing obligations tied to their broader patronage of Masjid al-Haram, alongside their extensive building programmes in Madinah.
Ottoman Era: The Final Standing Structure Before Saudi Rule
The most significant Ottoman-era intervention came under Sultan Abdul Hamid II, whose major restoration in 1333 AH (1915 CE) produced the structure that would remain standing over Zamzam into the twentieth century — the building later removed by Saudi authorities as part of the mid-century Mataf expansion described below. This Ottoman-era kiosk, with its dome and its position rising above the level of the Mataf floor, is the structure most visible in early twentieth-century photographs of the Haram, including those later reproduced in works such as Ibrahim Rif’at Pasha’s Mir’at al-Haramayn.
The Saudi Era: From Surface Kiosk to Underground Chamber
The Saudi period brought the most consequential transformation in the well’s entire architectural history: its removal from open, visible structure at ground level to an enclosed chamber beneath the Mataf floor, driven by the practical demand of accommodating vastly larger numbers of pilgrims performing tawaf around the Ka’bah.
In 1373 AH (1953 CE), King Abdulaziz installed the first mechanical pump at the well, along with zinc storage tanks and twenty-four taps, though traditional bucket use continued in parallel as an option for those who preferred it. This marks the beginning of Zamzam’s transition from a manually drawn well to a mechanically assisted water system.
The decisive architectural change came under King Saud, by Royal Order, in 1383 AH (1962–1963 CE), as part of a broader expansion of the Mataf, the circumambulation area around the Ka’bah. The well’s opening was lowered into a basement approximately 2.7 metres deep, with separate sections for men and women; bucket use was phased out entirely; and the older Ottoman-era surface kiosk over the well was removed to make way for open Mataf space (Saudipedia, “Timeline of Zamzam Well Development During the Saudi Reign”). This is very likely the same event that some secondary sources, including Wikipedia, date to “1964” — almost certainly describing the same expansion project using a slightly different year convention, though this dossier could not locate a single authoritative source definitively reconciling the exact year. Readers should treat 1962–1963 (1383 AH) as the best-supported dating, while noting the discrepancy honestly rather than presenting either year as beyond question.
In 1973, King Faisal ordered additional basement construction around the well. In 1979, King Khalid ordered a major well-cleaning operation using professional divers, which reportedly increased water flow; a second cleaning operation is documented later that same year, in November 1979, coinciding with the aftermath of the Grand Mosque siege. The final major architectural change came in 2003, when the basement entrances over the well were roofed and covered, maximising open Mataf floor space for tawaf. Drinking fountains were relocated to the periphery of the Mataf, and approximately four hundred square metres was added to the Mataf’s usable circumambulation area as a direct result of sealing the well’s entrances (Saudipedia; Madain Project, “Mataf”). This 2003 sealing is the single most consequential decision in the well’s modern architectural history from a pilgrim’s point of view: it is the reason a visitor today cannot see the well, walk down to it, or draw water from it directly, regardless of how close their tawaf brings them to its location beneath the marble floor.

Some pre-2003 sources describe a period when the well could reportedly be viewed by visitors from behind glass panels within the basement area. This guide could not confirm, from any current, dated 2025–2026 source, whether any public viewing arrangement of this kind still exists today following the 2003 sealing of the basement entrances. The dimensions and geological description of the shaft presented in the Architecture section above come from technical hydrogeological documentation produced by the Saudi Geological Survey’s Zamzam Studies and Research Centre and from peer-reviewed hydrochemistry research, not from an archaeological excavation report.
The one recurring “find” mentioned in the tradition — the gold gazelle statues, swords and armour said to have been uncovered by Abd al-Muttalib during the well’s rediscovery — belongs to the sira narrative discussed earlier in this guide, not to any modern, physically verified archaeological discovery. No published archaeological report describing recovered artefacts of this description from the well or its vicinity was located in this research. This detail should be treated exactly as the rest of the Abd al-Muttalib narrative is treated: a respected element of sira tradition, not a claim resting on physical archaeological evidence.

The 2010–2011 Arsenic and Nitrate Controversy: A Genuinely Disputed Episode

Dismantling the Masaru Emoto Water-Crystal Claims
No treatment of Zamzam’s science is complete, or honest, without directly addressing a claim that circulates constantly among pilgrims and on social media: that the Japanese researcher Masaru Emoto scientifically proved Zamzam water forms uniquely beautiful ice crystals, supposedly demonstrating its spiritual purity through photography. Pilgrims are told this constantly, often by well-meaning fellow travellers or online content creators, and they deserve a direct, unambiguous correction rather than polite silence.
This claim does not hold up, and it should be stated plainly rather than hedged. Emoto was a photographer and alternative-medicine entrepreneur, not a trained scientist, and his broader “water memory” or “water crystal” theory — the idea that water physically changes its molecular structure in response to words, thoughts, prayers, or music directed at it — has never been replicated under controlled, peer-reviewed, blinded scientific conditions. It is regarded by the mainstream scientific community as pseudoscience. His experiments used no blinding and no scientific controls of the kind required to draw any causal conclusion; crystal photographs were selected subjectively from among many images taken, a methodology that cannot support the claims popularly made about them. There is no mechanism in physics or chemistry by which spoken words, written labels, or musical exposure would alter the crystalline structure water forms on freezing, and no independent laboratory has ever reproduced Emoto’s results under conditions that rule out selection bias and experimenter expectation.
More specifically to Zamzam: a detailed debunking review of this exact claim notes that Emoto himself did not even specifically or rigorously claim that Zamzam water has properties distinct from other water in the way the popular internet version of the story suggests. The viral claim appears to be a distortion or exaggeration layered onto his already-unverified general theory, rather than a faithfully reported finding attributable to Emoto’s own published work (Scribd, “ZamZam Water by Dr Emoto”).
The correct, honest position for this guide to take is straightforward: the Emoto water-crystal claim is pseudoscience with no controlled scientific support of any kind, and it should be discarded entirely, not softened into “some people believe” language that leaves the false impression of a live scientific question. Muslims do not need, and should not seek, invented scientific validation to hold that Zamzam is a blessed water. Its status rests on the hadith evidence set out earlier in this guide — Bukhari 3364, Sahih Muslim 2473, the chest-washing narrations, and the broader sunnah of drinking it — not on unproven claims about ice-crystal photography. Ibn Abbas: The Narrator Who Preserved the Origin Story
Almost everything this guide has been able to establish with confidence about Zamzam’s origin traces back to a single companion: Abdullah ibn Abbas, cousin of the Prophet ﷺ, who narrated the foundational account preserved in Sahih al-Bukhari 3364 through his student Sa’id b. Jubayr. Ibn Abbas was young at the time of the Prophet’s ﷺ death — the sources place his age at around thirteen — and he was not, of course, present at the events he describes from the era of Ibrahim, Hajar and Isma’il. His narration transmits a family history and prophetic teaching he received, not personal eyewitness memory of events many centuries before his own birth. This is an important distinction to hold clearly: Ibn Abbas is the chain’s authenticated transmitter of a hadith he heard, not a witness to the events themselves, and the hadith’s authenticity rests on the soundness of that transmission chain rather than on any claim of Ibn Abbas’s own direct observation.
Later tradition also places Ibn Abbas at the site of Zamzam itself in his adult life, associating him with the shaded structure near the Safa corner mentioned in the Historical Development section above, and crediting him with the sprinkling of Zamzam water on a feverish companion, discussed in the Hadith References section. Ibn Abbas went on to become one of the foremost authorities on Qur’anic exegesis in the early Muslim community, and his transmission of the Zamzam origin narrative sits alongside his broader legacy as the companion most responsible for preserving detailed accounts of the seerah’s earliest chapters.
Al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib: The Custodian
The Prophet’s ﷺ uncle, al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib, held the siqayah — the office of providing water to pilgrims from Zamzam — in the period before and after the conquest of Makkah. Al-Abbas was among the last of the Prophet’s ﷺ close relatives to formally embrace Islam, doing so shortly before the conquest of Makkah in 8 AH, though the exact timing and nature of his earlier position is a matter some historians treat with nuance rather than certainty; some accounts suggest he had quietly supported the Muslim community from within Makkah even before his public conversion. Abu Dharr al-Ghifari: Thirty Days on Zamzam Alone
No companion’s personal story is more directly and dramatically tied to Zamzam than that of Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, preserved in the sahih narration of Sahih Muslim 2473 discussed at length above. Abu Dharr’s pre-Islamic life already inclined toward monotheism before he ever heard of the Prophet ﷺ; when his brother Unays returned from Makkah reporting a man there claiming prophethood and reciting extraordinary speech, Abu Dharr resolved to see for himself.
