Among the greatest gifts of Madinah, is to stand near the resting place of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and send your peace upon him. Come to this moment with love, and awe, and restraint — for love never removes good manners; it deepens them. Lower your voice. Carry yourself with dignity. Allah taught the very Companions not to raise their voices above his ﷺ; though he has returned to his Lord, the honour owed to him remains. This is no place for pushing, or shouting, or filming, or performance. It is a place for a quiet, sincere greeting:
السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ
As-salāmu ‘alayka yā Rasūla-llāh, as-salāmu ‘alayka yā Nabiyya-llāh.
“Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet of Allah.”
Then send your peace upon his two beloved companions who rest beside him, Abu Bakr and ’Umar, may Allah be pleased with them — they who stood with him in life and were laid beside him in death. Do not stretch the moment into a long performance, and never harm another soul to prolong your own standing. And hold this clearly: when you wish to make du’a, turn to face the Qiblah, not the grave. Love him ﷺ with the very greatest love a human heart can hold for another human being — and worship Allah, and Allah alone. There is a quiet, beautiful lesson here that many miss: we imagine the highest love is the loudest feeling. Madinah teaches you that the highest love is obedience, joined to adab. He ﷺ does not need your noise. He gave his life to raise an Ummah of mercy, and humility, and gentle order. Be of it.
