Ayn Zubaida: The Complete History and Engineering Story of the Water Channel That Kept Makkah Alive
Above the plain of Arafat, where more than a million pilgrims will stand this year and every year, a low stone channel runs along the base of Jabal al-Rahmah. Most of the crowd does not notice it. It is not a mosque, not a mountain named in the Qur’an, not a station of the Prophet’s ﷺ farewell sermon. It is a piece of buried infrastructure, a thousand years old, half-collapsed in places and beautifully preserved in others, and it is arguably one of the most consequential works of civil engineering in the pre-modern Islamic world. For twelve centuries, until the middle of the twentieth century, this channel and its sister branches were the reason pilgrims at Arafat, Muzdalifah and Mina did not die of thirst, and the reason the city of Makkah itself could sustain a growing population through some of the hottest, driest terrain inhabited by human beings anywhere on earth. It is called Ayn Zubaida — the Spring, or Canal, of Zubaida — and it is named after the woman who built it: Zubaidah bint Ja’far, wife of the Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid.
This is a guide to that channel and to the woman behind it, and it asks the reader to hold two things in mind at once. The first is that Ayn Zubaida’s value is immense and completely genuine. It is not a minor curiosity of Abbasid antiquarianism. It is a work of hydraulic engineering that moved water across tens of kilometres of some of the most difficult terrain in Arabia, using nothing but gravity, geometry and an intimate understanding of the region’s geology, and it did so reliably enough to serve as Makkah’s primary water infrastructure for the better part of a millennium. The second is that Ayn Zubaida is not a site of the Seerah. It has no connection to a Qur’anic revelation, no visit from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, no hadith describing it, because it did not exist until nearly two centuries after his death. It belongs to Abbasid-era engineering and social history, not prophetic history, and a guide that pretended otherwise would do a disservice both to the reader and to Zubaidah herself, whose real achievement needs no invented sanctity to be worth telling. What follows tries to give this remarkable site — and the remarkable woman who built it — their full and honest due: the biography of Zubaidah bint Ja’far and her son al-Amin’s tragic end in civil war, the genuine hydraulic engineering of the qanat system, the long chain of restorations from the Abbasids through the Mamluks and Ottomans to the Saudi state, the reasons the system finally fell silent in the twentieth century, and what a visitor to Makkah can and cannot see of it today.
Historical Background: Water, Makkah and the World Before Zubaida
The Geography of Thirst
Makkah sits in a narrow valley among barren granite hills in the Hejaz, a landscape of almost no permanent surface water. Rainfall is rare, violent and unpredictable — the wadis around the city are dry riverbeds for all but a handful of days each year, when a storm can turn them into flash floods before drying out again within hours. There is no river. There is no lake. There is, and always has been, the well of Zamzam, inside the sanctuary itself, associated in Islamic tradition with the story of Hajar and the infant Ismail. But Zamzam is a single well, drawing from a shallow local aquifer, and its yield — however treasured, however central to the sanctuary — was never sufficient on its own to supply a growing city and the enormous seasonal influx of hajj pilgrims that Islam brought to it. This is the basic and unavoidable fact against which the entire history of Ayn Zubaida has to be understood: Makkah’s location was chosen for reasons of sanctity and trade, not water security, and every century of its urban history has been a running negotiation with scarcity.
Before Islam, and in the first two centuries after it, the population of Makkah and the neighbouring holy sites of Mina, Muzdalifah and Arafat relied on a patchwork of wells, seasonal cisterns and water carried in on the backs of animals from outlying wadis. Some of this infrastructure is recorded in the earliest histories of the city, compiled by scholars such as al-Azraqi in his Akhbar Makkah. It was a fragile system even in ordinary years, and it strained visibly during the hajj, when tens of thousands of pilgrims converged on the same few square kilometres of desert for a handful of days. Water carriers made a living selling skins of water at the roadside; in years of drought, the price could climb to ruinous levels, and there are recorded episodes — discussed further below — in which pilgrims are said to have died of thirst on the plain of Arafat itself. This scarcity is the entire reason Ayn Zubaida exists. It is not a monument built for its own sake or for dynastic prestige alone; it was a direct, engineered response to a recurring humanitarian emergency.
Pre-Abbasid Attempts to Bring Water to Makkah
Zubaidah bint Ja’far was not the first person to try to solve this problem, and the article does her greater justice by being honest about that rather than crediting her with inventing water engineering in the Hejaz from nothing. Wells and small channels around Makkah’s outskirts had existed since pre-Islamic times, and the Umayyad and early Abbasid periods saw scattered efforts to improve local supply, mostly through digging new wells rather than long-distance conveyance. The decisive shift toward a true aqueduct — a channel that could bring water from a source many kilometres away, under enough control to survive the desert’s heat and evaporation — belongs to the early Abbasid period, and the surviving historical record is consistent in crediting the major breakthrough works to Zubaidah herself, acting in response to a specific and dated crisis she personally witnessed on hajj. According to Ibn Khallikan’s biographical dictionary and later compilations, when Zubaidah made her own pilgrimage and saw the suffering caused by the shortage — the Zamzam well reduced to a trickle in a drought year, and pilgrims paying exorbitant sums for water — she resolved to fund a permanent solution herself, and the project that resulted from that resolve is what the world now knows as Ayn Zubaida (Wikipedia, Zubaidah bint Ja’far).
The name of the resulting system is applied loosely today to two related but historically distinct works: an earlier canal drawing water from the springs of Wadi Hunayn, southeast of Makkah, and a later, larger canal drawing from Wadi Nu’man, further east near the foot of Jabal Kara close to Ta’if, which eventually became the dominant supply for Makkah and the ritual sites of Arafat, Muzdalifah and Mina (Wikipedia, Canal of Zubaidah). Both are conventionally grouped under the single popular name Ayn Zubaida, and this guide follows that convention while distinguishing the two lines where the engineering detail requires it.
Makkah’s Importance Before and After Islam, and Why Water Mattered More After
Makkah’s importance as a sanctuary predates Islam; it was already a site of pilgrimage and trade under the custodianship of the Quraysh before the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was born there in the Year of the Elephant. What changed after Islam was scale. The hajj, as codified in the Qur’an and the Sunnah, became a religious obligation incumbent on every able Muslim who could make the journey, and as the Islamic world expanded across the seventh and eighth centuries — from Spain to Central Asia — the number of people arriving in Makkah for the pilgrimage grew far beyond anything the pre-Islamic city had ever hosted. Allah says in the Qur’an,
﴿وَأَذِّن فِي النَّاسِ بِالْحَجِّ يَأْتُوكَ رِجَالًا وَعَلَىٰ كُلِّ ضَامِرٍ يَأْتِينَ مِن كُلِّ فَجٍّ عَمِيقٍ﴾
“And proclaim to the people the pilgrimage; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel, coming from every distant pass.”

This verse, describing pilgrims converging from every distant pass, describes precisely the logistical pressure that Makkah’s water infrastructure had to absorb by the eighth century — travellers arriving not from nearby villages but from the far provinces of an empire that stretched, by the time of Harun al-Rashid, from the Atlantic coast of North Africa to the borders of Central Asia (Quran.com, Surah al-Hajj 22:27). The Abbasid Caliphate, which had shifted the political centre of the Islamic world to Baghdad in 762 CE, presided over a period of extraordinary wealth and administrative ambition, and it was against this backdrop — a golden age of Muslim civilisation with the resources and engineering culture to attempt genuinely large infrastructure projects — that Ayn Zubaida became possible. The project belongs as much to the story of Abbasid state capacity as it does to any individual’s piety, though as this guide will show, Zubaidah’s individual will was indispensable to actually getting it built.
Changes Through History: A Rough Chronological Orientation
Before going further, it is worth setting out the broad chronological shape of what follows, because Ayn Zubaida’s history spans more than 1,150 years and touches five successive political orders. Construction began under Zubaidah in the last years of the eighth century and was substantially complete by the early ninth (variously dated 801 CE or 809–810 CE in the sources, a discrepancy discussed later in this guide). The system then required continual, expensive maintenance across the remaining Abbasid period, was repaired by regional rulers of Makkah and by the Mamluk sultans of Egypt in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, underwent a major Ottoman-era reconstruction in the mid-sixteenth century funded by the Ottoman princess Mihrimah Sultan, was restored again under late Ottoman administration in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, was rebuilt once more by King Abdulaziz Ibn Saud in 1928 after severe flood damage, and finally ceased to function as Makkah’s water supply in the early-to-mid 1970s, superseded by modern desalination and groundwater pumping. What survives today is a patchwork: some stretches restored and open to visitors near Arafat, long stretches buried under modern development, and a great deal that has simply vanished. The Story Behind Ayn Zubaida: A Queen, a Drought, and a Decision
The Woman Who Would Build It
To understand why Ayn Zubaida exists, it helps to first understand who Zubaidah bint Ja’far was, because the channel cannot be separated from her personality, her resources and her particular relationship to power. She was born around 765–766 CE into the innermost circle of the Abbasid dynasty: her father, Ja’far ibn al-Mansur, was a son of the second Abbasid caliph, al-Mansur, the founder of Baghdad, which made her his granddaughter (Wikipedia, Zubaidah bint Ja’far). Her given name at birth was Amat al-Aziz, or by another account Sukainah; “Zubaidah,” meaning something like “little butter-ball,” was an affectionate nickname bestowed by her grandfather al-Mansur himself, and it is the name history remembers. Her mother, Salsal, was the sister of al-Khayzuran, the powerful wife of the caliph al-Mahdi and mother of two future caliphs — which meant that Zubaidah grew up as a first cousin of Harun al-Rashid, the man she would eventually marry, making the marriage a union of double Abbasid blood.
Zubaidah and Harun married in 781–782 CE at the Baghdad residence of Muhammad ibn Sulayman, while Harun was still a prince rather than caliph; he would not succeed to the throne until 786, on a night remembered in Abbasid court history as the “night of the three caliphs,” when the reigning caliph al-Hadi died and Harun succeeded him within hours. Zubaidah, as his first wife and closest cousin, became the most senior woman at the court of the new caliph, and she would remain so for the following twenty-three years, until Harun’s death in 809.
A Household of Almost Unimaginable Wealth
The historical sources are consistent, and consistently astonished, in their description of Zubaidah’s personal wealth and the scale on which she lived. She maintained a household staff that reportedly included one hundred women who had memorised the Qur’an in full, so that her palace was said to hum constantly with recitation — contemporaries compared the sound to a beehive. She dined from gold and silver plate rather than the plain leather settings still common even among the wealthy of her era, and she is credited with popularising the fashion of sandals embroidered with jewels among Abbasid noblewomen. She travelled in a palanquin built of silver and ebony and lined with silk. Her palace featured a great hall with pillars of ivory and gold, verses of the Qur’an inscribed on the walls in gold lettering, and gardens stocked with exotic animals — one account, repeated widely though impossible to verify beyond anecdote, has her keeping a pet monkey dressed as a cavalry soldier, attended by thirty servants, whose hand visiting generals were expected to kiss as a mark of her status (Wikipedia, Zubaidah bint Ja’far). These details, drawn largely from later Abbasid-era anecdote collections, sit at the more colourful end of what can be documented; they should be read as evidence of how spectacularly wealthy and culturally prominent Zubaidah was remembered as being, rather than as verified court records in the modern sense.
What is much better attested, because it is corroborated by independent administrative and geographic sources across centuries, is that Zubaidah ran her wealth as an active business, not a passive inheritance. She employed a staff of agents to manage her properties and conduct commercial ventures independently of her husband’s treasury, and this personal fortune — separate from the caliphal purse — is what she drew on for her public works. This distinction matters enormously for understanding Ayn Zubaida correctly: it was not a state infrastructure project funded from the general Abbasid treasury, but a work of private philanthropy on an almost governmental scale, financed by one woman’s independent fortune.
Five Pilgrimages and a Drought That Changed a City
Zubaidah performed the hajj on multiple occasions throughout her life — the sources typically speak of five pilgrimages — and it was on one of these journeys, conventionally dated to around 805 CE (193 AH), that she witnessed the crisis that would define her legacy. A severe drought had struck the Hejaz. The Zamzam well, the sanctuary’s ancient and most trusted source, had been reduced to a mere trickle. Pilgrims and residents alike were suffering visibly; later Meccan sources describe the price of a single skin of water climbing to as much as ten silver dirhams, an extortionate sum for what should have been freely available (Discover Makkah, Ayn Zubaydah). Zubaidah’s first act, according to the biographer Ibn Khallikan, was immediate and practical: she ordered the Zamzam well itself deepened, to restore what flow could be recovered from the local aquifer. But she understood, correctly, that deepening a single well in a shallow and unreliable water table could not be a permanent solution for a city of Makkah’s size and growing pilgrim traffic. She decided instead to bring water into the city from an outside source, over a considerable distance, and to build something durable enough to outlast any single drought cycle.
The often-repeated line associated with this decision — that she was prepared to see the project through “were every stroke of a pickaxe to cost a dinar” — comes down through Ibn Khallikan’s biographical dictionary and has become the defining quotation of Zubaidah’s public works, cited in essentially every modern account of the canal, including recent Saudi heritage materials that still use the line to introduce her to visitors (Discover Makkah, Ayn Zubaydah). Whatever its precise wording in the original Arabic and whatever embellishment centuries of retelling may have added, the sentiment it captures is corroborated by what actually happened: an engineering project of this scale and cost, driven through determinedly to completion, well beyond what any purely rational cost-benefit calculation of the period would have supported.
The Engineers’ Warning, and the Choice She Made Anyway
According to accounts preserved by the medieval historian Ibn al-Jawzi and repeated in modern retellings drawing on the classical Arabic biographical tradition, when Zubaidah first ordered her engineers to survey the problem, they returned with a discouraging report: bringing water into Makkah from a source many kilometres away would require tunnelling through solid rock along a precisely engineered gradient, over a distance of ten miles or more by the estimate then available, and it would be exceptionally costly (Arab News, “Queen Zubaida’s other key achievements”). This is one of the few moments in the historical record where we get a glimpse of the actual technical conversation behind the project — engineers laying out the difficulty honestly, and a patron overruling caution not out of ignorance of the cost but in full knowledge of it. She purchased the entire Wadi Hunayn valley, including its existing date-palm orchards, in order to secure control of its water sources, and set her engineers to work designing not a simple open channel — impossible to sustain across exposed, superheated desert rock without catastrophic evaporation losses — but a covered, largely subterranean aqueduct in the qanat tradition long used across the Iranian plateau and greater Middle East. The engineering detail of what her surveyors and workmen actually built is substantial enough to deserve its own full treatment later in this guide; what matters at this narrative stage is the basic shape of the decision: faced with an honest estimate of extraordinary cost and difficulty, she chose to proceed anyway, and she paid for the entire project from her own resources.
The Darb Zubaidah: Her Road as Well as Her Water
Zubaidah’s fame as a builder does not rest on the Makkah canal alone. Running alongside and predating much of the canal’s own construction history was a second, even more geographically ambitious project bearing her name: the Darb Zubaidah, the great overland pilgrim road linking Kufa, in what is now Iraq, to Makkah, a route of roughly 1,300 kilometres, of which about four-fifths lies within modern Saudi Arabia and one-fifth within modern Iraq (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, tentative list entry 6577). The road itself predates Zubaidah — organised improvements began as early as 751 CE under the first Abbasid caliph, Abu al-Abbas, who ordered new milestones, fire-signal towers and rest-houses along the route, and the work continued under Caliph al-Mansur between 754 and 775 CE — but it was during and after Zubaidah’s era that the route reached its greatest sophistication, and it is her name, not any caliph’s, that popular memory has permanently attached to it, a testament to the specific, personal, and remembered scale of her contribution to it (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, tentative list entry 6577).
The Darb Zubaidah’s importance lay in a problem distinct from Makkah’s own water shortage: getting large numbers of pilgrims safely across roughly two weeks of open desert on foot, on camel, and by caravan, in a landscape offering almost nothing to sustain human life unaided. UNESCO’s own tentative-list documentation identifies twenty-seven major stations and twenty-seven substations along the full route, and describes the route at its peak of prosperity as equipped with markers and milestones, wells, pools, dams, palaces and houses, with some stretches partially paved (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, tentative list entry 6577). The scale of some of these individual stations is itself striking. At al-Thulaimiya, roughly ten kilometres from al-Qa’ near today’s Saudi-Iraqi border, survives a remarkably well-preserved circular water basin 32 metres in diameter, built with two concentric walls, the inner one 1.6 metres thick, fitted with a 6.5-metre-wide staircase so pilgrims could descend safely to the water; the ninth-century Muslim geographer al-Harbi recorded the station as one Zubaydah herself established, complete with a settling tank, a mosque and other structures (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, tentative list entry 6577). At al-Jumaimiyah, a square rainfed basin measuring 30 by 30 metres and 3.45 metres deep survives in close to perfect condition, its eastern wall fitted with eleven descending flights of steps; European travellers who visited the site in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries recorded that as late as February 1910 the basin still held enough water to supply twelve thousand men for several days (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, tentative list entry 6577).
Other stations reveal the road’s function as more than a simple line of wells. Al-Zabalah, one of the largest stations on the entire route at roughly two kilometres by one, is recorded by Arab historians as a place where water was available in great quantity and where traders gathered to do business with pilgrims during the hajj season; its surviving remains include a square fortress approximately 35 by 35 metres, with a round tower at each corner and one at the centre of each wall, surrounded by its own walled courtyard, alongside a large restored water tank and hundreds of deep wells in the wadi below, some still used by Bedouin herders today (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, tentative list entry 6577). At al-Rabadhah, a station with a still older history — it had served as a state grazing reserve under Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab, and later as the place where the companion Abu Dharr al-Ghifari lived out his final years and died in 32 AH (652 CE) — archaeologists have recovered ceramics and interior decoration in the imperial Abbasid style, evidence of the station’s ninth-century prosperity, before it was abandoned following an attack by Qarmatian raiders in 931 CE (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, tentative list entry 6577). At al-Kharabah, engineers built an aqueduct to carry water from a separate wadi into a rectangular filtering basin roughly 36 by 28 metres and nearly six metres deep, from which the water passed through sluices into an enormous circular reservoir 54 metres across — a filtration-and-storage system of real hydraulic sophistication, built to serve pilgrims crossing one of the road’s more exposed stretches (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, tentative list entry 6577).
The road itself, not merely its water points, required engineering. Across roughly forty kilometres of the soft sand of the Nafud desert between Buraykat al-Ashshar and Birkat al-Ara’ish, modern surveys have identified surviving stone paving, two to four metres wide, laid specifically to spare pilgrims the exhausting effort of dragging their feet through loose sand with every step — a detail that gives some sense of the logistical seriousness with which the Abbasid state approached pilgrim welfare on this route, since paving tens of kilometres of desert by hand, and feeding and housing the labour gangs required to do it, was itself a major undertaking (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, tentative list entry 6577). Elsewhere, where the road crossed the volcanic lava plain of Harrat Rahat, engineers cleared the largest boulders from the path and stacked them into low curb-walls on either side, winding the route around rocks too large to move, in places clearing a path as wide as twenty metres (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, tentative list entry 6577).
The station of Fayd, roughly the halfway point between Kufa and Makkah and close to the junction with the road to Madinah, grew into the single most important administrative centre on the entire route, serving for more than five centuries as a hub where pilgrims and merchants converged, and where pilgrims commonly stored food and supplies for their return journey; the traveller Ibn Battuta, passing through in 1327 CE, described a fortified town with a large fortress whose prosperity rested squarely on trade with passing pilgrims (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, tentative list entry 6577). UNESCO’s documentation names a specific cluster of medieval Arab geographers and travel writers — Ibn Khordadbah, Ibn Rustah, Abu al-Faraj, al-Yaqoubi, al-Maqdisi, al-Hamdani, al-Harbi and Ibn Jubair, alongside Ibn Battuta himself — as the principal historical sources documenting the road’s stations, and it is substantially through their combined, independent testimony, cross-checked against physical remains still visible today, that historians and archaeologists have been able to reconstruct the route with the level of confidence reflected in this section (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, tentative list entry 6577).
The road’s fortunes tracked the wider Abbasid state’s fortunes. Historians identify roughly the century between 750 and 850 CE as the period in which the Darb Zubaidah functioned as the single most important hajj route in the Islamic world; a break in secure communication between Iraq and the Hejaz during the tenth century damaged the ability of Iraqi and Persian pilgrims to use it, a partial eleventh-century revival never fully restored its earlier prosperity, and the last organised Abbasid pilgrimage convoy recorded as travelling the full route dates to 1243 CE, after which it fell into the long decline from which the twenty-first-century Saudi-Iraqi UNESCO nomination and associated archaeological programme now represent the first serious, coordinated attempt at rehabilitation and formal recognition (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, tentative list entry 6577).
A Note on What Cannot Be Verified
It should be said plainly, in keeping with the honest standard this guide tries to hold throughout, that many of the most vivid anecdotes about Zubaidah — the exact wording of her exchanges with her engineers, the precise scene of her standing before the drought-stricken pilgrims, the detail of the jewelled monkey and its thirty attendants — come to us through medieval Arabic biographical and anecdotal literature (adab), a genre that valued a good story and a memorable line as much as strict documentary accuracy. These anecdotes are not fabricated hadith and they are not claims about revelation or prophecy; they are the ordinary raw material of pre-modern biography, and centuries of subsequent Islamic and Arab historians, along with modern Saudi heritage authorities, have continued to repeat them because they capture something true about Zubaidah’s character even if the exact dialogue cannot be checked against a contemporary transcript. This guide repeats them in that spirit — as the traditional portrait of Zubaidah handed down through the centuries — while being clear that the core, verifiable facts are the ones that matter most for assessing her legacy: that she was immensely wealthy, that she personally financed a functioning aqueduct that supplied Makkah and the ritual sites for over a thousand years, and that she did so as an act of private philanthropy rather than state policy.
The Prophet ﷺ and Ayn Zubaida: An Honest Accounting
A guide written in this style would normally use this section to narrate every authentic report of the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ visits, prayers and sayings connected to a place. For Ayn Zubaida, intellectual honesty requires a different kind of section, because the connection simply does not exist. The Prophet ﷺ died in 632 CE. Zubaidah bint Ja’far was not born until roughly 765 CE, more than a century later, and the canal that bears her name was not built until the very end of the eighth century and the first years of the ninth — some 170 to 180 years after his death. There is no hadith describing the Prophet ﷺ drinking from this spring, walking this route, or blessing this water, for the simple reason that none of it existed in his lifetime. Any claim to the contrary would be a fabrication, and this guide will not manufacture one.
What can honestly be said is narrower, but still meaningful. The Prophet ﷺ did pass through and camp in some of the same wadis that would, generations later, supply Zubaidah’s engineers with water. Wadi Hunayn, the valley from which the earlier of the two Zubaidah canals drew its water, is the same valley in which the Battle of Hunayn was fought in 8 AH (630 CE), shortly after the conquest of Makkah, when the Prophet ﷺ led the Muslims against a coalition of the Hawazin and Thaqif tribes. The Qur’an refers to this battle directly:
﴿لَقَدْ نَصَرَكُمُ اللَّهُ فِي مَوَاطِنَ كَثِيرَةٍ ۙ وَيَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ إِذْ أَعْجَبَتْكُمْ كَثْرَتُكُمْ فَلَمْ تُغْنِ عَنكُمْ شَيْئًا وَضَاقَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْأَرْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ ثُمَّ وَلَّيْتُم مُّدْبِرِينَ﴾
“Allah has already given you victory in many regions, and on the day of Hunayn, when your great number pleased you, but it did not avail you at all, and the earth was confining for you with its vastness, then you turned back, fleeing.”

This is a genuine and well-attested Qur’anic connection to the geography — but it is a connection to Wadi Hunayn as a battlefield, roughly a century and a half before Zubaidah’s engineers arrived there to build cisterns and tunnels for an entirely different purpose. The valley’s fame in the Seerah and its later role as a water source for her aqueduct are two separate layers of history that happen to share a place name and a location; one did not grow out of the other, and no classical source claims that it did (Quran.com, Surah at-Tawbah 9:25).
It is also worth being honest about the well of Zamzam in this context, because of how often the two are confused by modern visitors — a confusion treated in full in the Common Misconceptions section later in this guide. Zamzam has a rich and authentic connection to prophetic history, tied to the story of Ibrahim, Hajar and Ismail and referenced in hadith collected in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Ayn Zubaida has none of that. The two are entirely different water sources, built or revealed roughly two and a half millennia apart by most traditional reckonings, and the fact that Zubaidah’s first act on encountering the water crisis of 805 CE was to order Zamzam itself deepened is precisely because she recognised Zamzam as the older, sacred, insufficient source, and her aqueduct as the new, practical, supplementary one. Conflating the two — treating Ayn Zubaida as though it shares Zamzam’s prophetic pedigree, or attributing miracles to its water — does a disservice to both: it diminishes Zamzam’s unique standing and it distracts from Zubaidah’s very real, very human achievement of applied engineering and philanthropy.
This distinction matters practically as well as theologically, because it shapes what a Muslim visitor should expect to feel, and what they are entitled to expect historically, at each site. At Zamzam, a pilgrim drinks from a source whose story is anchored in the Qur’an and Sunnah themselves — in the account of Hajar’s search for water for her infant son Ismail, and in the Prophet’s ﷺ own reported statements about the water’s blessed status. At Ayn Zubaida, or at what remains of it, a visitor is instead encountering the outcome of ninth-century state capacity, private wealth, and applied hydraulic engineering — no less worthy of respect and reflection, as this guide argues throughout, but categorically different in the kind of significance it carries. A pilgrim guide who tells visitors that Ayn Zubaida’s water carries the same spiritual status as Zamzam, or that drinking from a preserved section of the canal today would carry religious merit analogous to drinking Zamzam water, would be making a claim with no basis in any classical or modern source consulted for this guide, and this guide corrects that claim explicitly rather than allowing it to pass unaddressed.
Qur’anic Connections: What Genuinely Applies, and What Does Not
In the same spirit, this section cannot honestly present verses that were revealed about Ayn Zubaida, its construction, or Zubaidah herself, because no such verses exist. The canal is post-prophetic Abbasid infrastructure; the Qur’an was completed in revelation by the time of the Prophet’s ﷺ death, more than a century and a half before Zubaidah was born. Any attempt to read specific ayat as being “about” this canal, or to claim asbab al-nuzul connecting a revelation to her project, would be invented and this guide declines to do that.
What is legitimate, and genuinely useful to the reader, is to set out the broader Qur’anic ethic of water and its provision that Zubaidah’s project embodies and that gives the story its wider Islamic resonance — not because the Qur’an refers to her canal, but because her canal is a concrete historical expression of principles the Qur’an repeatedly emphasises. The Qur’an speaks of water as one of the primal signs of Allah’s mercy and as the very basis of life:
﴿وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ الْمَاءِ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ حَيٍّ ۖ أَفَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ﴾
“And We made from water every living thing. Then will they not believe?”

“And We have sent down rain from the sky in a measured amount and settled it in the earth. And indeed, We are able to take it away.”

Classical exegetes such as Ibn Kathir, reading verses of this kind, consistently draw the lesson that water is not a resource human beings created or can take for granted, but a deliberate, measured gift, entrusted to human stewardship rather than owned outright — which is part of the theological backdrop against which the Islamic legal and ethical tradition developed such a strong emphasis on protecting and sharing water rather than hoarding or monopolising it (Quran.com, Surah al-Mu’minun 23:18). The Qur’an also praises spending wealth in ways that benefit the wider community, a principle directly relevant to how Zubaidah’s own contemporaries and later biographers framed her canal:
﴿وَمَا تُنفِقُوا مِن خَيْرٍ يُوَفَّ إِلَيْكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ لَا تُظْلَمُونَ﴾
“And whatever good you spend will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.”

The modern lesson a reader can honestly draw from these verses, in connection with this site, is not that the Qur’an foretold Ayn Zubaida, but that Zubaidah’s decision to spend a vast personal fortune on water infrastructure for strangers she would never meet — pilgrims from Andalusia, Khurasan and Africa passing through Makkah long after her own death — sits squarely inside a Qur’anic vision of wealth as a trust to be spent for enduring, communal benefit rather than accumulated for its own sake. The connection between the Qur’an and this site is a connection of ethic and example, not of direct revelation, and this guide presents it as such rather than dressing it up as something it is not (Quran.com, Surah al-Baqarah 2:272).
Hadith References: The Authentic Sunnah on Water as Charity
Exactly as with the Qur’anic Connections section above, there is no authentic hadith that mentions Ayn Zubaida by name, describes it, or was spoken in relation to it — the canal is two centuries too late for any such report to be genuine, and this guide has found no classical or modern source claiming otherwise. What this section can honestly and usefully provide is the authentic hadith material on the specific Islamic virtue that Zubaidah’s project is remembered as fulfilling: the provision of water as an act of charity, and specifically as sadaqah jariyah, ongoing or “flowing” charity whose reward continues to reach the giver long after the deed and even after death. These hadith do not reference Zubaidah, but they explain, from authentic sources, exactly why later Muslims came to view her canal — and the broader Darb Zubaidah road infrastructure discussed below — as one of the most admired categories of good deed in the entire tradition.
The foundational hadith on ongoing charity is narrated by Abu Hurayrah and recorded in Sahih Muslim:
“When a man dies, his acts come to an end, except three: ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah), or knowledge from which people benefit, or a righteous child who prays for him.”
This is graded Authentic (sahih) and recorded as Sahih Muslim 1631 (Sunnah.com, Sahih Muslim 1631). This is the hadith that gives the whole category of “sadaqah jariyah” its name and its theological force, and it is the lens through which Islamic scholarship across the centuries has understood public infrastructure projects — wells, canals, mosques, endowed schools — as spiritually valuable precisely because their benefit does not stop when the builder dies.
The specific application of this principle to water comes through a well-attested narration concerning the companion Sa’d ibn Ubadah, preserved in several versions across the major hadith collections. In the version recorded in Sunan Abi Dawud:
“Sa’d asked: Messenger of Allah, Umm Sa’d has died; what form of sadaqah is best? He replied: Water (is best). He dug a well and said: It is for Umm Sa’d.”
This is recorded as Sunan Abi Dawud 1681 and is graded Hasan by al-Albani (Sunnah.com, Sunan Abi Dawud 1681). A closely related version, phrased as a direct question about which charity is best, is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah 3684: “I said: O Messenger of Allah, what charity is best? He said: Giving water to drink.” This narration is graded Da’if (weak) in some editions such as Darussalam’s, though the report is considered Hasan when its several supporting chains are taken together, a conclusion reflected in the Encyclopedia of Translated Prophetic Hadiths’ explanatory note on the combined narration (Hadeeth Encyclopedia, hadith 65613).
A note on authenticity: this report about Sa’d ibn Ubadah exists in more than one chain of transmission across Sunan Abi Dawud, Sunan an-Nasa’i and Sunan Ibn Majah, and scholars differ slightly on how to grade the individual chains — some rating a particular wording weak on its own but strong when the chains are considered together, others such as Ibn Hibban rating the Ibn Majah wording authentic outright. What is not in dispute across any of these gradings is the underlying content: that the Prophet ﷺ was asked which form of charity is best, and that he identified water, and that a companion responded by digging a well and naming it for his deceased mother — which is the origin, in the authentic Sunnah, of the entire practice of dedicating water projects as memorial charity that Zubaidah’s canal would later exemplify on an imperial scale.
A further, separate hadith often cited alongside these on the excellence of water charity claims: “There is no charity that brings a greater reward than water.” This report, however, does not hold up under scrutiny: the scholarly verdict, reviewed in detail by Islamic legal researchers examining its chains of transmission through Ibn Adiyy’s al-Kamil and other collections, is that every narrator in its various chains is weak, and Shaykh al-Albani accordingly classified it as very weak (Islam Q&A, hadith authenticity review). This guide flags it as such rather than repeating it uncritically, in keeping with the standard that a report’s popularity on social media and in charity fundraising materials is not evidence of its authenticity.
One further hadith worth including for completeness concerns the general merit of giving anyone a drink of water, transmitted by Sahl ibn Sa’d and recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari, in the chapter specifically headed “Giving water in charity, or as a gift”: the Prophet ﷺ, when given a cup to drink from, asked the young boy sitting to his right whether he might pass the remainder to the elders on his left, and deferred to the boy’s answer that he would not give his own share to anyone. This report, graded Authentic (sahih) and recorded as Sahih al-Bukhari 2351, is not directly about charitable water provision in the sense of building a well, but it sits within the same body of hadith establishing water-sharing as a matter of serious ethical attention in the Sunnah (Sunnah.com, Sahih al-Bukhari 2351).
It is worth pausing on why this particular chapter heading exists at all in a collection as carefully organised as Sahih al-Bukhari. Imam al-Bukhari did not simply gather hadith at random; his chapter divisions (the kitab and bab structure of his Sahih) reflect a deliberate legal and ethical taxonomy, and the fact that he created a specific chapter dedicated to “giving water in charity, or as a gift” tells us that the earliest generations of hadith scholarship already recognised water-giving as a distinct, named category of good deed worth collecting evidence about, not merely an incidental example folded into a broader chapter on charity in general. Later hadith commentators, working within this same organisational logic, treated the water-charity reports as establishing several linked points: that charity on behalf of the deceased is of real benefit to them, that water specifically was treated by the Prophet ﷺ as an especially high-value form of that charity given how essential and how scarce it could be in the Arabian environment in which the Sunnah was first transmitted, and that acts of charity need not be large in absolute terms to be praiseworthy, since a well dug by one man for his mother and a canal built by an empress for an entire pilgrimage population are both instances of the same underlying category, differing only in scale.
A further related narration, this one addressing the general merit of digging wells specifically, is preserved in a hadith narrated by Abu Hurayrah: a man travelling on a road, suffering severe thirst, found a well, climbed down, drank, and on climbing back out saw a dog panting and licking mud from thirst; he climbed back down, filled his shoe with water, and gave the dog to drink, and Allah forgave him for that act. This report is recorded, fittingly, in a chapter of Sahih al-Bukhari titled “The digging of wells on the ways,” as Sahih al-Bukhari 2466, graded Authentic (sahih) as part of the collection (Sunnah.com, Sahih al-Bukhari 2466). This hadith does not concern human beneficiaries or Zubaidah’s project directly, but the fact that al-Bukhari filed it specifically under a chapter heading about well-digging on public roads demonstrates that within the authentic Sunnah, the specific act of providing water on a route travelled by others is treated as spiritually significant even at the smallest possible scale and even when the immediate beneficiary is an animal rather than a person — which reinforces rather than undermines the weight the tradition places on water-provision at any scale, including the imperial scale of an engineered aqueduct serving an entire pilgrimage road.
Taken together, this small cluster of hadith — one establishing the category of ongoing charity in the most general terms, one specifically naming water as the best form of it, and one illustrating the Prophet’s ﷺ own attentiveness to fair water-sharing — forms the authentic religious backdrop against which every Muslim visitor to Ayn Zubaida, or to any of the wells and cisterns of the Darb Zubaidah, should understand what they are looking at: not a site sanctified by prophetic visitation, but a vast, historically documented act of exactly the kind of charity these hadith describe, carried out at a scale that makes Zubaidah bint Ja’far one of the most significant sadaqah jariyah patrons in Islamic history.
Historical Development: Abbasid Origins Through Saudi Restoration
The World Zubaidah Built In: Baghdad and the Abbasid Golden Age
To understand why a project of this scale and cost was even conceivable, it helps to understand the world Zubaidah lived in. Her grandfather al-Mansur had founded Baghdad in 762 CE as the new capital of the Abbasid Caliphate, deliberately relocating the centre of Islamic political power away from Damascus and the former Umayyad heartland and toward Iraq, a region with older Persian imperial administrative traditions, richer agricultural surplus from the Tigris-Euphrates floodplain, and better access to trade routes reaching from the Mediterranean to China (Wikipedia, Abbasid Caliphate). By the time Zubaidah married Harun al-Rashid in the early 780s, Baghdad had grown, within barely two decades, into one of the largest and wealthiest cities on earth, a magnet for scholars, merchants, poets and engineers from across an empire stretching from the Atlantic coast of North Africa to the frontiers of India and Central Asia. The reign of Harun al-Rashid himself, from 786 to 809 CE, is remembered in both Islamic and later Western historiography as something close to the high-water mark of Abbasid wealth, administrative sophistication and cultural production — the era later mythologised, not always accurately, in the frame stories of the One Thousand and One Nights.
This context matters for understanding Ayn Zubaida for a simple reason: a project costing the equivalent of several tonnes of gold, executed as private philanthropy by a single individual rather than as a state-funded public work, was only conceivable in a court with the kind of concentrated private wealth the early Abbasid caliphal family possessed. Zubaidah’s own fortune appears to have been substantially independent of her husband’s treasury — she employed her own business agents, managed her own estates, and financed projects, including the rebuilding of Tabriz after the 791 CE earthquake mentioned earlier in this guide, without needing to draw on state funds. The same court culture that produced Baghdad’s famous libraries, translation movements and architectural patronage also produced the surplus wealth, the engineering talent, and the administrative capacity to survey, fund and build a qanat system stretching tens of kilometres through difficult desert terrain, at the other end of the empire from the capital itself. The Abbasid Period: Construction and First Repairs (2nd–3rd Century AH / 8th–9th Century CE)
The historical sources do not agree perfectly on the exact date of completion, and this guide states that disagreement plainly rather than picking a single number and presenting it as certain. Some accounts date the completion of the initial Hunayn-fed works to around 185 AH (801 CE); others place the major construction and expansion, including the shift toward Wadi Nu’man, in 194–195 AH (809–810 CE) (Wikipedia, Canal of Zubaidah). The Royal Commission for Makkah’s own heritage material dates Zubaidah’s redirection of the Wadi Nu’man flow toward Arafat to around 195 AH (Royal Commission for Makkah, Ayn Zubaida Stream). What can be said with confidence is that the project unfolded in stages across roughly a decade at the very end of the eighth century and the opening years of the ninth, that it began with the Hunayn source and was later extended and effectively superseded in importance by the larger Nu’man works, and that the entire undertaking falls within the reign of Harun al-Rashid and the years immediately following his death in 809 CE, during which Zubaidah, now the mother of the reigning caliph al-Amin, continued to expand and fund the project.
The total cost is recorded, again with some variation between sources, at approximately 1.7 million mithqal of gold — roughly 7,225 kilograms by one modern conversion cited in scholarly summary (Wikipedia, Canal of Zubaidah) — while a separate Saudi heritage account gives a comparable figure of the equivalent of 5,950 kilograms of gold for the Wadi Nu’man—Arafat works specifically (Discover Makkah, Ayn Zubaydah). Whichever precise figure is preferred, the order of magnitude is the same and it is staggering: this was a private individual financing, from her own fortune, a piece of state-scale infrastructure costing the equivalent of several tonnes of gold, at a time when gold coinage was the actual medium of a caliphal economy, not a metaphor.
The canal required maintenance almost immediately, because the very features that made a qanat viable in desert terrain — long buried tunnels, exposure to flash flooding in the wadis it crossed — also made it vulnerable to silting, flood damage and gradual deterioration of its lime-mortar linings. The first major recorded repair campaign came under the Abbasid caliph al-Mutawakkil, who reigned 232–247 AH (847–861 CE); Turkish scholarly sources place a specific repair in 847 CE after flood damage had filled sections of the channel with silt (TDV İslam Ansiklopedisi, Aynizübeyde). Decline of the Darb Zubaidah and the Isolation of the Hejaz (4th–7th Century AH / 10th–13th Century CE)
The canal at Makkah did not exist in isolation; it was one part of a wider network of Abbasid-era hajj infrastructure that included the overland pilgrim road from Kufa, known as the Darb Zubaidah, discussed fully in its own section below. Both the canal and the road depended on the political and economic stability of Abbasid Iraq, and both suffered as that stability eroded. According to the official UNESCO tentative-list submission for the Darb Zubaidah, the tenth century saw a break in communications between Makkah and Iraq that damaged the ability of Iraqi and Persian pilgrims to perform hajj by the traditional route, contributing to a progressive decline and a growing separation of Arabia from the political mainstream of the Islamic world; a partial revival occurred in the eleventh century, but the route never recovered the levels of prosperity it had enjoyed in the eighth century, and the last organised Abbasid pilgrimage convoy along the Darb Zubaidah is recorded as having taken place in 1243 CE (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, tentative list entry 6577). The Meccan canal itself is not as well documented for this specific period in the sources consulted for this guide, and this guide states that gap plainly rather than inventing detail to fill it; what can be inferred from the broader pattern is that a water system this dependent on continuous, well-funded maintenance would have suffered along with the wider decline of the region’s connectivity to the Abbasid heartland.
Mamluk-Era Repairs (8th–9th Century AH / 14th–15th Century CE)
Control of the Hejaz and its holy cities passed in the later medieval period to the Mamluk sultans of Egypt, who took an active interest in the upkeep of Makkah’s water supply as part of their broader patronage of the holy sites. The local Meccan authorities also played a role: Emir Hasan ibn Ajlan, who governed Makkah in the early fifteenth century, is recorded among those who carried out repairs, and Mamluk sultans including Qaitbay and al-Ashraf Qansuh al-Ghuri — the latter reigning as the second-to-last Mamluk sultan before the Ottoman conquest of Egypt — are both credited with restoration work on the system (Wikipedia, Canal of Zubaidah). A separate strand of the canal’s history, concerning the older Hunayn-fed line rather than the Nu’man line, records that in 726 AH (1325–1326 CE) an official named Amir Chupan, acting as governor for the Ilkhanid ruler Abu Sa’id, uncovered and restored an older buried pipeline bringing water from the mountains east of Makkah; this work came to be known as Ayn Bazan, and later, from the fifteenth century onward, as Ayn Hunayn, and it remained the primary basis of Makkah’s water supply until the 1560s (Wikipedia (German), Ayn Bazan). The engineer credited with major work on the underground storage tanks of the system in 726 AH is remembered in Saudi heritage material as “Bazan,” after whom the underground tank structures called bazans are named (Discover Makkah, Ayn Zubaydah).
The Ottoman Period: Mihrimah Sultan’s Restoration and Later Campaigns (10th–13th Century AH / 16th–19th Century CE)
The Hejaz came under Ottoman suzerainty in 1517, and the sultans took the maintenance of Makkah’s holy sites, including its water system, as a matter of dynastic prestige. By the middle of the sixteenth century the Ayn Zubaida system — by this point often referred to by the composite names Ayn Hunayn and Ayn Arafat for its two branches — had again fallen into serious disrepair, its channels choked with sand and flood debris to the point that water could no longer reliably reach either Arafat or Makkah. The Ottoman chronicler Eyüp Sabri Paşa records that the Qadi of Makkah wrote to the imperial government describing the emergency, and the major restoration that followed was funded and championed specifically by Mihrimah Sultan (1522–1578), the daughter of Suleiman the Magnificent, who is recorded as personally requesting that the honour and cost of the repair be hers (Wahhabis and Water-Infrastructure, Mid-Afternoon Map). Turkish academic sources describing this episode record Mihrimah Sultan sending 50,000 gold pieces for the work, initially engaging around 400 workers and engineers before expanding the workforce to roughly 1,000 when it became clear the smaller team could not finish in reasonable time, with the project overseen first by the former Egyptian treasurer Ibrahim Bey and, after his death, by the Meccan Shafi’i mufti Abu Bakr al-Husayni. Large new cisterns and pools were built at Arafat as part of this campaign, described by the celebrated Ottoman traveller Evliya Çelebi in his own writings.
Architectural-historical scholarship on the great Ottoman court architect Mimar Sinan also credits him, in some accounts, with involvement in repair works connected to Mecca’s sacred sites during this same Suleiman-era campaign of investment in the two holy cities’ water infrastructure, alongside his far better documented work on Istanbul’s Kırkçeşme water system — though the surviving building lists attributed to him focus more explicitly on repairs to the Haram’s domes than on the aqueduct itself, and this guide notes that connection cautiously rather than overstating Sinan’s personal role in the Meccan canal specifically (Brandenburg University of Technology, Mimar Sinan project list).
Subsequent Ottoman-era maintenance continued at intervals: a three-year restoration was ordered by Sultan Mustafa III beginning in 1757, overseen by an official named Feyzullah Efendi with a recorded budget of 86,000 kuruş, and in 1819 Sultan Mahmud II ordered a further restoration campaign, in the course of which significant administrative authority over the project was extended to Muhammad Ali of Egypt (Wikipedia, Canal of Zubaidah). Earlier in that same century, the historian Eyüp Sabri Paşa records that the last major pre-nineteenth-century repairs, prior to the Hejaz’s occupation by Wahhabi forces from 1803 to 1818, had been carried out in the years 1767 to 1770, and that after the Ottoman-Egyptian reconquest of the holy cities under Mehmed Ali Paşa, more than fifty years passed before the next significant round of repairs was undertaken (Wahhabis and Water-Infrastructure, Mid-Afternoon Map). By the 1870s the system had once again fallen into disrepair, and this time the funding came not from the Ottoman state directly but from an international fundraising effort coordinated among Indian Muslims across the wider Islamic world, with the resulting repair works carried out between 1876 and 1883 (Wikipedia, Canal of Zubaidah).
The Saudi Period: The 1928 Reconstruction Under Ibn Saud (14th Century AH / 20th Century CE)
The Hejaz passed into the control of the nascent Saudi state under King Abdulaziz Ibn Saud in the 1920s, and one of the earliest heritage priorities of the new administration was the rehabilitation of Ayn Zubaida after severe flood damage had once again choked the system with silt and debris. This restoration, carried out in 1928, brought the canal back to functionality and is recorded as having restored its capacity to as much as 40,000 cubic metres of water per day at its peak — an enormous volume for a gravity-fed desert aqueduct, and a figure that illustrates just how substantial the underlying engineering remained even after more than a millennium of use (Wikipedia, Canal of Zubaidah). This 1928 restoration also formalised the administrative oversight of the system: a dedicated authority, the Ayn Zubaida Authority, had in fact been established somewhat earlier, in 1327 AH (1909 CE), during the late Ottoman period, specifically to oversee the canal’s maintenance and development, and this body’s responsibilities were carried forward into the Saudi era (Discover Makkah, Ayn Zubaydah).
Despite this major twentieth-century restoration, the underlying water table on which the entire system depended was already coming under unprecedented pressure from a different direction: modern mechanical pumping. As Makkah’s population grew rapidly through the middle decades of the twentieth century, and as motorised well pumps made it possible to extract groundwater at rates the qanat’s gentle gravity-fed design had never been built to compete with, the shallow aquifers feeding Wadi Nu’man and Wadi Hunayn began to draw down faster than seasonal rainfall could recharge them. This is the direct technical cause of the canal’s eventual obsolescence, discussed in full in the next section, and it should be understood as a story of the system being out-competed by newer technology exploiting the same finite water source, not simply a story of neglect.
Architecture and Engineering: How Ayn Zubaida Actually Worked
The Basic Engineering Concept: A Qanat
Ayn Zubaida belongs to a family of hydraulic structures known across the Middle East and Central Asia as the qanat — a gently sloping underground tunnel that conveys groundwater from a source at higher elevation to a point of use at lower elevation, using gravity alone, without any need for pumping. The reasoning behind choosing an underground channel over a simple open canal was explicitly hydraulic and climatic, not merely defensive or aesthetic. Read together, the most defensible summary is that the core Nu’man-fed line ran somewhere in the range of 27 to 37 kilometres depending on exactly which endpoint and which historical extension is being measured, with the combined system including the earlier Hunayn works totalling somewhat more.

Access Shafts, Inspection Chambers and Wells (Kharzat)
Along the length of the buried tunnel, engineers sank a long series of vertical access shafts at regular intervals, allowing workers to descend for cleaning, desilting and structural repair, and in many places allowing the public to draw water directly. Their height above ground is recorded as ranging from 1 to 3.5 metres, while their depth below ground could reach as much as 34 metres depending on the slope of the surrounding land, with shallower shafts where the tunnel ran closer to the surface. The Channel Itself: Dimensions and Construction

Water storage and pressure management depended on a network of pools built at key points along the route. Bridges: Carrying Water Across Valleys
Because the canal’s route crossed valleys, plains and mountainous terrain, engineers had to build bridges to carry the water channel across low ground without letting it drop to grade and lose its carefully calculated gradient, or without exposing it to destruction by flash flooding along the valley floor. The Route in Detail: From Jabal Kara to Makkah
The full route, as reconstructed from Saudi heritage documentation, ran as follows. Water gathered at the foot of Jabal Kara and collected at the Awjar Pool in Wadi Nu’man, then passed through a channel to the second source point at al-Aqim, before heading toward the land of Arafat, where the channel wound around the base of Jabal al-Rahmah on three of its sides — meaning that pilgrims performing the rites of the Day of Arafah were, in the most literal physical sense, standing directly above or beside the buried channel supplying their drinking water. From Arafat the channel flowed westward, crossing Wadi Urnah, then ran along the edges of the southern side of Jabal al-Mazimin, passing the Khasirah Bridge, and continued to Muzdalifah until it reached Wadi Mahsar at a point called Duqm al-Wabar. From there its course followed the southern edge of Mount Mina until it reached al-Mafjar, where it emptied into a large well called the Zubaida Well, in an area known today as al-Aziziyah, marking the conventional end point of this great canal. Capacity and Performance
The clearest available figure for the system’s peak carrying capacity comes from the 1928 restoration under King Abdulaziz, after which the canal is recorded as having been capable of delivering up to 40,000 cubic metres of water per day (Wikipedia, Canal of Zubaidah). To put that figure in human terms: even allowing for generous estimates of pilgrim and resident water consumption, a sustained flow of that magnitude represents a very substantial share of a mid-twentieth-century desert city’s total water needs, delivered entirely by gravity, with no pumps, no engines and no imported energy of any kind — drawing solely on the elevation difference between the mountain springs at Jabal Kara and the city and ritual sites below. That the same basic hydraulic principle, refined and repaired across eleven centuries of successive dynasties, could still deliver water at this scale in the age of the internal combustion engine is perhaps the single most persuasive piece of evidence for the sophistication of the original ninth-century design.
The Hydrology: Where the Water Actually Came From
It is worth pausing specifically on the hydrology underlying the whole system, because it explains both why Zubaidah’s engineers chose the sites they chose and why the system was ultimately vulnerable to the twentieth-century pumping that ended its useful life. The Hejaz mountains east of Makkah and Ta’if receive a modest but real amount of seasonal rainfall, concentrated in intense, short-duration storms rather than steady year-round precipitation; that rainfall runs off the granite and volcanic bedrock of the escarpment and collects in the sandy, gravel-filled floors of wadis such as Nu’man and Hunayn, where it percolates downward and accumulates in a shallow alluvial aquifer sitting on top of the much harder, less permeable bedrock beneath. A qanat is, in essence, a tunnel designed to intercept this shallow water table at a point high enough in elevation that gravity alone can carry the intercepted water all the way to the point of use, without ever needing to lift it mechanically. This hydrological picture also explains the system’s greatest long-term weakness. Placing Ayn Zubaida within the wider history of qanat engineering across the Islamic world helps clarify what was, and was not, unusual about it. Qanat technology is generally understood by specialists to have originated on the Iranian plateau in antiquity, spreading over subsequent centuries across the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia and even as far as the Mediterranean, adapted wherever a gently sloping arid landscape sat above a usable shallow aquifer. Comparable systems have been documented by archaeologists in locations as varied as the Jordanian regions of Udhruh and Ma’an, the Judean Hills, the ‘Arava valley, and — as discussed in the Archaeological Findings section of this guide — the plain around Qurh in the al-Ula valley of the northern Hejaz itself, where a 2025 survey identified more than twelve distinct qanats and over two thousand individual access shafts, considerably more numerous than the roughly 130 documented at Ayn Zubaida, even though the al-Ula network served an oasis town rather than a major pilgrimage centre (Open Quaternary, “An Early-Middle Islamic Waterscape in the Hejaz”). Set against this comparative backdrop, Ayn Zubaida was not a technological first for the region — the underlying qanat method was already established and evidently well understood across the Hejaz and the wider Islamic world by the time Zubaidah’s engineers began their survey — but it was, by any of the length, cost, and capacity figures discussed above, one of the more ambitious single applications of that method specifically directed at supplying a major religious pilgrimage centre, executed at a scale that required sustained state and private investment across more than a millennium to keep functioning.
A Note on the Limits of the Sources
A note on the engineering sources: readers should understand that no single contemporary Abbasid engineering treatise describing the original design specifications of Ayn Zubaida in modern technical terms survives, and modern figures for gradient, shaft spacing and capacity are drawn from a combination of medieval Arabic geographic and historical writing, Ottoman-era survey records, and twentieth and twenty-first century engineering and archaeological assessment of the surviving physical remains. Where sources disagree — as they do on total length and on the exact date of completion — this guide has reported the range rather than asserting false precision, and where a specific figure is stated without qualification, it reflects the figure given by the cited source, not an independently re-derived measurement.
Archaeological Findings: What Has Actually Been Excavated
Serious archaeological attention to the Zubaidah-era hajj infrastructure has focused more heavily on the overland Darb Zubaidah pilgrim road than on the Makkah water canal itself, and this guide reports that imbalance honestly rather than inflating the canal’s archaeological record to match the road’s. For the canal specifically, the most substantial modern documentation is not excavation in the classic sense but architectural and hydrological survey of the surviving above-ground and near-surface structures — bridges, inspection shafts and channel sections — carried out by Saudi heritage authorities in connection with the conservation and public-access work described later in this guide, alongside broader academic classification of the system within the comparative literature on historic qanats, such as the treatment of Saudi Arabian aqueducts by researchers including Zaidi and al-Bassam and the wider handbook of underground aqueduct heritage edited by Angelakis and colleagues (Wikipedia, Canal of Zubaidah). The Darb Zubaidah road, by contrast, has been the subject of genuine, sustained archaeological fieldwork over the past several decades, and because Zubaidah’s road-building patronage and her Makkah canal patronage are historically linked acts by the same person, this work is directly relevant to understanding the full scope of her legacy even though it concerns a physically separate piece of infrastructure. The single best-documented excavation is at Fayd (also transliterated Fa’id), the halfway station on the Kufa–Makkah route and, by medieval accounts including that of the traveller Ibn Battuta, one of its largest and most important administrative centres. Saudi Arabia’s Heritage Commission (formerly the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage) carried out excavation seasons at Fayd between 1998 and 2012, and the University of Ha’il conducted further seasons from 2014 to 2022; the results, including radiocarbon dating of occupation phases, are published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Islamic Archaeology (Journal of Islamic Archaeology, Fayd excavation report). This work has documented substantial standing remains at the site, including fortifications, reservoirs and residential quarters consistent with Fayd’s medieval reputation as a major waystation with markets and permanent population, not merely a rest stop.

The documentary record supporting UNESCO’s tentative-list submission gives a sense of just how much physical evidence has actually been surveyed and measured, station by station, along the route, and it is worth setting some of that detail out here because it is genuine archaeological documentation rather than textual report alone. At Fayd itself, beyond the excavation seasons already mentioned, surface survey has recorded a fortress reduced by centuries of local reuse of its stone — residents of the modern village built their garden walls from the same masonry — but the fort’s basic layout, apparently multi-storey with a tower at each corner, remains legible, alongside two substantial quadrangular reservoirs roughly 35 by 35 metres, both now filled with sand but with their walls still discernible, and a stretch of the original pilgrim track some eighteen metres wide, cleared of stone and running some two kilometres southeast of the modern settlement (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, tentative list entry 6577). At al-Kharabah, surveyors have documented a two-basin filtration system fed by tunnels draining the surrounding wadi, with a single domed room standing between the two reservoirs, built of roughly hewn stone likely quarried from the nearby volcanic harrat, probably housing whoever was responsible for the station’s upkeep (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, tentative list entry 6577). This is the kind of granular, measured, site-by-site documentation — basin diameters, wall thicknesses, staircase widths — that distinguishes genuine archaeological survey from a general historical narrative, and it is precisely this kind of survey, rather than textual report alone, that underlies the modern case for both the road’s heritage value and, by extension, the credibility of the broader Zubaidah-era engineering tradition of which the Makkah canal is also a part.

Two further stations documented in the UNESCO tentative-list survey deserve mention for the sheer specificity of what has been measured on the ground. At al-Zabalah, some 38 kilometres south of Rafha near the modern Saudi-Iraqi border, surveyors have recorded one of the largest stations on the entire route, covering an area of roughly two kilometres by one kilometre, with medieval Arab historians noting that the settlement had abundant water and drew Arab traders to gather there during the hajj season; the surviving remains include a square fortress approximately 35 by 35 metres with a round tower at each corner and a further tower at the centre of each wall, an inhabited settlement and mosque referenced in historical sources, three water tanks in the wadi to the north (the largest measuring roughly 40 by 45 metres and since restored in concrete by the Ministry of Agriculture), and hundreds of deep wells dug into the solid ground, some still used today by herdsmen and Bedouin for their livestock (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, tentative list entry 6577). At al-Thulaimiya, a station about ten kilometres from al-Qa’ that the ninth-century geographer al-Harbi records as having been established by Zubaydah herself, complete with a reservoir, a settling tank he calls a misfat, and a mosque, surveyors have documented a very well-preserved circular basin 32 metres in diameter, built of two concentric walls with the inner wall some 1.6 metres thick, and fitted with a broad staircase 6.5 metres wide allowing pilgrims to descend safely to the waterline (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, tentative list entry 6577). Al-Harbi’s direct attribution of this particular station to Zubaydah by name is significant, because it is one of relatively few individual stations along the entire nearly 1,400-kilometre road that a medieval geographer explicitly credits to her personally, as opposed to the road-building programme in general terms; it offers a rare, geographically specific anchor for the more general claims about her patronage discussed throughout this guide.
