Prayer for the journey
﷽
Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. Subhanallathi sakharalana hadha wama kunna lahu muqrineen, wa inna ila rabbina lamunqaliboon. Allahumma, inna nass’aluka fee safarina haadha al-birra wat-taqwa, wa-minal ‘amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin ‘alayna safarana haadha wat-wi ‘anna bu’dahu. Allahumma, antas-sahibu fis-safar, wal-khalifatu fil-ahl. Allahumma, inni a’udhu bika min wa’tha-is-safar, wa ka-abatil-manzar, wa su’il-munqalabi fil male-wal- ahil.
“Allah is Greatest, Allah is Greatest, Allah is Greatest. Glory be to Him who made this subjugated for us, although we were unable to do so ourselves. And indeed, to our Lord we shall return. O Allah, in this journey of ours we ask You for righteousness and piety, and for deeds which are pleasing to You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us, and shorten its distance for us. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Protector of the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, from having a change of heart and being in a bad predicament, and I seek refuge from an evil return in my wealth and family.”
When one reaches Miqaat — the last boundary one must not cross without making the Niyyat — and has changed into the ihram clothes, one can make the Niyyat to enter the state of ihram. For travelers who arrive in Saudi Arabia by plane:
- If you travel first to Medina, you cross Miqaat on the way to Makkah. When you are going for Umrah
- If you go to Makkah first, you cross Miqaat about 30 minutes before landing in Jeddah. They will announce it
Masjid-e-Aisha serves as Miqaat only for those already in Makkah who wish to perform Umrah again.
Niyyat for Umrah
Allahumma innee ureedul umrata fa-yassirhaa lee wa taqabbal-haa minnee.
“O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah — make it easy for me and accept it from me.”
Talbiyyah
Talbiyyah is to be recited at least three times after the Niyyat has been made.
Labbayk-Allahumma labbayk. Labbayka laa-sharika laka-labbayk. Innal-hamdah wanni’amata laka wal-mulk, laa sharika lakk.
“Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am; You have no partner, here I am. Indeed, all praise, blessings and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner.”
When Arriving in Makkah
Allahumma hadha haramuka wa amnuka fa-harrimni’ala-n-nar, wa aaminni min’adhabika yawma tab’athu’ibadak, wa-j’alni min awliya’ika wa ahli ta’atik.
“O Allah, this is Your Sanctuary and security; so forbid me from the Fire, and protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants. And make me among Your friends and among those who obey You.”
When entering Masjid al-Haram
A’udhu bi-llahil-azim, wa bi-wajhihi-l-karim, wa sultanihi-l-qadim, mina-sh-shaytanir-rajim.
“I seek refuge with Allah, the Magnificent, and by His Noble Face, and by His Eternal Sovereignty, from the accursed Satan.”
Since one enters Haram with the intention of performing Umrah, Tahiyyat al-Masjid is not recited.
When seeing the Kaaba for the first time
Allahu akbar. Allahu akbar. La ilaha illa-llah.
“Allah is Greatest. Allah is Greatest. There is no god but Allah.”
Allahumma zid hadha-l-bayta tashrifan wa ta’ẓiman wa takriman wa mahabatan, wa zid man sharrafahu wa karramahu mimman hajjahu awi-tamarahu
tashrifan wa takriman wa ta’ziman wa birra.
“O Allah, increase this House in honor, greatness, dignity, and awe, and also increase those who honor and revere it among those who perform Hajj or Umrah — in honor, dignity, greatness and righteousness.”
Allahumma antasalamu wa minka-s-salam, hayyina Rabbanaa bis-salam.
“O Allah, You are Peace and from You comes peace; grant us life, our Lord, in peace.”
Niyyat for Tawaf
Allahumma inni uridu l-tawwafa baytika l-harami fa yassirhu li wa taqabbalhu minni.
“O Allah, I intend to perform Tawaf of Your Sacred House, so make it easy for me and accept it from me.”
When starting Tawat at Al-Hajr-e-Aswad
Bismillahi wallahu akbar.
“In the name of Allah, and Allah is Greatest.”
Between each round one may pray to Allah in one’s own way, in one’s own language. Remember that men must not cover their right shoulder during tawaf, and walk thirftly the first 3 rounds (raml)
Between Rukn-e-Yamani and Hajr-e-Aswad
Rabbanaaa aatina fid dunyaa hasanatanw wa fil aakhirati hasanatanw wa qinaa azaaban Naar.
“Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”
When Completing the 7 Rounds of Tawaf
Anta waliyyunaa faghfir lanaa warhammnnaa wa Anta khairul ghaafireen. Waktub lanaa fee haazi hid dunya hasanatan wa fil Aakhirati inna hudnaaa ilaik.
“You are our Helper, forgive us and have mercy on us. And You are the best of forgivers. And grant us goodness in this world and in the Hereafter; indeed we turn to You.”
When Passing Maqam-e-Ibrahim the last time
Wattakhizoo mim Maqaami Ibraaheema musallaaa
“And take the Station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer.”
Pray 2 Rakah Wajib Nafl for Tawaf
After you finish Tawaf, find a place after passing Maqam-e-Ibrahim. Preferably recite Surat Al-Kafirun and Surat Al-Ikhlas after Surat Al-Fatiha.
Find a free spot where you are not disturbing others so you can pray calmly.
Drink ZamZam
Proceed to the zoned area for Masa, and drink ZamZam while reciting:
Allahumma inni as’aluka ‘ilman nafi’an, wa rizqan wasi’an, wa ‘amalan mutaqabbalan, wa shifa’an min kulli da’.
“O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, abundant provision, a deed accepted, and healing from every disease.”
Saee
You shall now perform Saee, which involves walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa. Men should walk briskly or run between the green lights. Women er exempted
On the Way to Safa and Marwa
Innas Safaa wal-Marwata min sha’aaa’iril laahi faman hajjal Baita awi’tamara falaa junaaha ‘alaihi ai yattawwafa bihimaa; wa man tatawwa’a khairan fa innal laaha Shaakirun’Aleem
“Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever performs Hajj or Umrah to the House — there is no wrongdoing in walking between them. And whoever does good voluntarily, then indeed Allah is Appreciative, All-Knowing.”
Abda’u bima bad’allahu bihi.
“I begin with that which Allah has begun with.”
Recited at both Safa and Marwa
Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, wa lillahil-hamdo.
“Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. And to Allah belongs all praise.”
Laa ilaaha illal laahu wahdahoo laa shareeka lahoo, lahu-l mulko, walahul hamdu, yuhyee wayumeetu, wahuwa , alaa kulli shay’in qadeer.
“There is no god except Allah alone without partner. To Him belongs the Dominion, to Him praise. He gives life and causes death, and He has power over all things.”
Laa ilaaha illal laahu wahdahoo, anjaza wa’dahu wa nasara ‘abdahu wa hazamal-ahzaba wahdah.
“There is no god except Allah alone. He fulfilled His promise, supported His servant, and defeated the confederates alone.”
One thus walks 7 laps between Safa and Marwa. One lap is counted as one trip from Safa to Marwa or from Marwa to Safa. That is, 7 times back and forth between Safa and Marwa.
When finishing Saee
One may conclude Saee by praying 2 Rakahs Nawafil to complete the Umrah. Preferably recite Surat Al-Kafirun and Surat Al-Ikhlas after Surat Al-Fatiha. After completing this one may make any extra prayer one desires.
When leaving Masjid al-Haram
Bismillahi, wa s-salatu wa s-salamu ‘ala rasuli llah. Allahumma inni as’aluka min fadlik.
“In the name of Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, I ask You for Your bounty.”
Halq or Taqsir
To exit ihram, both men and women must cut their hair. Men may shave or shorten, while women should trim only a small amount (about 2 cm).
